Totally agree Prudent. I decided just to let her see it in the school copy, she wasn't too bothered, she's a sensible girl. Also, she's now been chosen to join NAGTY (National Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth) so she's very excited about that and this does seems like a good scheme to be involved with.I've been lucky, I'll be lucky again. ~ Bette Davis0

Maybe you could print her poem in a posh font on high quality paper, and have that framed instead. You could also do copies for grandparents / aunties, etc at Christmas.
I think that's what I would do - although I have to say my daughter would probably be too embarrassed to let me have it on display:rolleyes:
essexgal;)old enough to know better, young enough not to care;)0 -
no its not a scam. i had my poem published in that book. my teacher also entered it. since then i have had a few published in other books too. the wordsmith magazine is great i loved it only i lost my slip to renew my subscription.. do you have any contact details for wordsmith? as id really like to get there magazine again
:T well done to your daughter.. only a few from our school go published and we were a small school so in a bigger school its quite an acheivment for her0 -
oh and you dont HAVE to buy the book either.. i did but you dont need too. just sign the orange copywright form and it goes in the book anyways0

oh and you said also you really dont know why her teacher would put their pupils up for it... i totally agree. i write ALOT of poems but not everyone likes to and im not exactly the best writer i prefer to write about thoughts and feeling which i wouldnt publish because theyre personal.. one of my friends doesnt like poetry at all shes says she cant write and because she refused to do it she got detention.. i think the schools do it because they want as many of their pupils in the book as possible because it names the school and i think thats wrong it should be a choice thing0

I did a search for Young Writers to see if this had been mentioned here. I know I'm dredging up an old thread but really feel the need to post.
My daughter has just been selected for the poetry book and so have the other children in her class. A friend with children at another school has told me that a mutual friend had told her what a scam it was when their children were chosen for a different book. The mutual friend was now having her third child published. Each child's class had had the whole class published. A teacher at a third school told me her whole class had also been published this year.
I think the idea in itself is lovely. The children obviously feel a great deal of pride in having their work published.
However, the fact that they publish so many different books, don't need to pay the contributors and only really have the market of family and friends of the contributors leads me to believe this is just a scam. I'd be interested to see the profits of the publisher!
Most schools receive very little from this either apart from a free copy of the book and the greater confidence of their children.
Needless to say, I will be buying the book as it's a huge boost to my daughter's confidence.0 -
Response to Chirp Chirp.
Hi, I have spoken to the customer service people concerned and the company is not a scam, but it is a business. The number of entries usually published is around 70-80% which is quite alot when you consider the number of schools in the UK. However the school gets a copy free and enters a larger competition with cash prizes. They are also provided with the resources for the project such as the lesson plans, making it a easy way for teachers to teach poetry. As a parent we dont have any obligation to buy the books except for our child pulling heart strings. Something which to be fair I also experience with Harry Potter and cheesestrings...As a result I can't fault the company for making money.

Well done! :T
Definately NOT A SCAM. My children have had their poems published with Young Writers for the past 5 years. It's lovely reading all the children's poems when the book finally arrives (if you buy a copy, that is).Eleventh Heaven No. 321
