Problems with online clothes shopping

I've not had much luck with online clothes shopping lately.

The biggest problem is with a small high street chain. I bought some stuff from them a couple of weeks ago and needed to return more than half of it. The postage cost me £9. They are refusing to refund, saying that they only provide credit notes.

I wrote the standard letter regarding distance selliing and got a phone call saying I was being given a credit note and that's that. The thing is I haven't even been given a credit note. This was for nearly £60 of clothes :(

I've also just discovered today that a delivery from another company was put into my wheelie bin late last week whilst I was away - on bin day. It's marked as delivered on tracking and I have a card saying it was put in the bin, but no parcel. Where do I stand?

With the latter (HDNL delivered it perchance?!) Call up the company you bought it from, they did not deliver it to you, Delivery into a dustbin is not an acceptable form of delivery. The company should either replace the items or offer a full refund.

With the former, I'm under the impression DSRs would cover you to return anything within 7 days of its arrival, no small print allowed. I'd want to speak to a manager about that if they are refusing you the refund. Where postage comes into it you are accountable for that and wouldn't be entitled to a refund, some companies do not its not something which is expected by law anyway.

CAB maybe? Or the Consumer Rights website.

Thanks for the reply. I contacted my cc company about the company who refused a refund and it looks like they'll pursue it after 30 days.

The other company have refunded and are apparently asking for a "driver interview". Poor sod probably thought they were being helpful - they usually put things behind my bins - never in them before! I think I'm going to look into getting a parcel safe for christmas.

The fact you've stated a "driver interview" makes me think this was supposed to be delivered by HDNL.....

If it is I don't think "poor sod" applies here: they do it all the time, they know better as when I worked in a company that used them, they were always doing this and the sheer number of calls we dealt with where this had happened was beyond a joke, insurance pays (which is why the high prices arise in dlivery costs) they need to get their drivers not to do this: it was happening seveal years ago and still seems to be the case now, trust me, "poor sod" is not an idiot and knows better: or at least his/her company do!

Not helping I know BUT last week, while my son was at home, their was a knock on the door, by the time my son got out of bed there was no one there, but he did see a royal mail van pulling away so he checked in the small recycling bin to find a parcel. The drive did not put a note in the door so if my son had not been there we wouldnt have known about the delivery..shocking. So it isnt just HDNL, Royal mail do it as well

OMG They're all at it!! Am a bit suprized by RM though- they lose a lot of money this way, with HDNL its the companies insurance who pay (or at least used to pay).

Can't believe anyone would be this stupid: you'd think they'd actually think about what their doing! Guess targets must be coming first with this one.

I've had HDNL drop parcels over the 6ft fence at the side of the house and left in the rain, and others left in the bin (which always terrified me if they did this on collection day as above). I've also had Royal Mail knock and run. It seems they're all at it - under pressure to provide a cheaper and cheaper service, and this means they simply can't afford to wait for people to answer the door anymore. Personally I much prefer the services whereby the parcel is delivered to a local shop that is open all hours, which I can stroll down to and collect at my leisure.
  • I'd definitely pursue the credit card option with the shop that refuses your delivery - if you have a valid reason then they should refund your money and issue a chargeback to the retailer. This won't be cheap and will hopefully prevent them from doing this kind of thing again.
