How long should electrolysis take to work?

I've been taking a long weekend once a month to stay at home like a recluse and let my chin hairs grow for a few days then going for electrolysis about once a month, twice if there are bank holidays I can use. I shave in between rather than continuing the waxing I used to do.
I started doing this last September, so I've been approximately a dozen times now.
My friend opted for laser on hers and she is all done even though she started after me.
I'm starting to feel as if I'm wasting my time with this, and it's not always easy to take the time off every month, not to mention that it's boring being under house arrest. Can anybody offer me some encouragement to keep me going?

Nope! I've tried it twice. The first time fortnightly for about 6 months, and the second time regularly for about a year, and both times I gave up in total disgust as it seemed to make no difference to the rate of growth whatsoever and I found it quite painful. I now just manage with hair removal creams and tweezers.
I have fair skin and fair facial hair so sadly don't think laser is an option for me, but I'd love a permanent solution. I have PCOS so have struggled with this for about 20 years!0 -
I went every 3-4 weeks for a year and a half to have my eyebrows done (grew into the middle). I was not told it would take this long. I still have the odd hair that needs plucking.
If you can afford it I'd say stick with it. I'm really pleased I had mine done now."Sometimes letting things go is an act of far greater power than defending or hanging on.”0 -
I don't know if this is something you might be interested in but I got a hair removal machine thingy from I think boots or argos or somewhere. A slightly older version of this one basically

I think it's great tbh. I used it for a while about 2 years ago then got lazy, but I have hairless patches on my leg and bikini line where I used it. And I wouldn't say I had to use it for long for those.
Then I moved house and stuck it in a cupboard but keep meaning to get it out and do more! you've reminded me nowcarpe diem

Unfortunately electrolysis doesn't work for everyone. Some people will see very quick results, some have to persist for a while before any notable difference and for others it just doesn't work at all. You could try timing your sessions around the moon for a few months and see if that makes any difference. When the moon is 'waning' in the sky (when it's shrinking in size from a full moon to a new moon) hair re-growth is thought to be at a minimum so try having your electrolysis then for a couple of months and see if it is any more effective. If you are shaving inbetween sessions and you happen to shave when the moon is 'waxing' (growing bigger in the sky from a new moon up to a full moon) instead of 'waning', this could be encouraging the hair to grow again.
Good luck, I hope you find a solution - being stuck under house arrest every month doesn't sound much fun!

I wouldn't compare this treatment with the laser one because laser hair removal method IS NOT permanent and electrolysis is. Or, at least, it's the most permanent so far.
Electrolysis is slower because it treats each individual hair whereas the laser treatment treats a patch of skin at a time. But it's up to you if you want it done faster or if you want the hair removed for good.
Of course, it all depends on many things. One of which is your electrologyst - they should be really skillful so speak to them about it and see how you feel - you might want to change them or even the clinic.
See what else can influence the treatment time, according to hairgoodbye site:
- Hair stage – only hair in the growth phase of the hair growth cycle can be treated - which leaves about 10-15 % of your hair out at any time
- Hormone imbalance – adolescence and middle years are both hair growth spurt times for men. Any hormone imbalance resulting in abnormal hair growth must first be treated by the physician.
- Follicle density – the amount of hair with which you start the treatment
- Previous removal methods – all hair removal methods can lead to distorted follicles that might have ingrown hair as the result. Success rate with virgin hair is very high.
- People taking certain medication, have certain medical conditions or who are under a lot of stress should preferably avoid electrolysis, or they must be handled with care.0
