What xbox live subscription is!

My doh has bought me an xbox 360 for xmas and b'day. I haven't seen it but i know its a bundle premium pack with COD3.
The question is how long is the subscription for xbox live for and what exactly does it give you/let you have?

Premium has Silver level subscription, which gives basic access to the service.

When you by your console and sign up for silver membership you get a months Gold sub free.

After that if you want to continue the Gold sub buy on of the available cards as once they run out it will simply revert to silver sub unlike a credit card which will auto renew at a whopping £40 every year until you phone and cancel.

The cards can be be bought for under £20 on ebay if you search.
