Cautions do show up on a standard CRB check up to ten years (10 years being serious offence that pose you a risk to others and 5 years for other offences), the majority of offences will be spent after 5 years.

CRB have 2 types of disclosure (not three as stated above) standard disclosure which is the norm for most jobs, the enhanced disclosure is most common in jobs where you work with children.

Just for general knowledge, the caution stays recorded on your criminal record for 100 years (but spent after the period described above)

Savvy_Sue, the following site gives details on the three levels:http://www.cbscreening.co.uk/crb-checks.
Ah right, the basic one is not actually a CRB check at all, it is the method any individual can use to get a copy of their criminal record. That could be useful to someone who's worried about what might show up, BUT it's no substitute for an actual CRB check requested by an employer / voluntary organisation. And it's also worth noting that what you see on a basic check may not be all that appears on an enhanced disclosure.

As I understand it Standard checks show everything on your record. And Enhanced includes the standard info and adds whether you're barred from working with any vulnerable groups.

A caution is on your record for life, that is why you never accept one and take your turn in court.
The police are results based and they are generally rolled out where there is not enough evidence to proceed so the CPS send it back in hope of at least getting something.
You have the Legal right to refuse to accept a caution.

At least if the court finds you guilty you have a clean record once it's spent

You don't have a "clean" record though! If you take a caution it is immediately spent, which means you don't have to diclose it to employers.

Anything you are convicted of stays on your file forever. After the period set out under the rehabilitation of offenders act a conviction may be "spent", which means you don't have to disclose that conviction after the day it is spent, but a conviction never gets removed from your file. Ever.

This information is out of date. There used to be a loophole that convictions below a certain level would become spent, but cautions were never spent. But in the last few years, cautions have been added to the list of things which are spent. A caution is now spent immediately, so you can no longer say it is more damaging than a conviction.

  • I think it would be a real shame if an employer judged you so heavily and withdraw the offer for a theft caution 5 years ago. I hope that if it does show up they will allow you to still join.

I have applied for a job in a school, and received a caution for shoplifting around 18 years ago, i had no plans to disclose it, will it show up? My sis has had loads of enhanced crb checks done and hers have never come up so i'm inclined to not mention it.......

I'd mention it just in case. TBH a caution for shoplifting 18 years ago won't go against you getting a job in a school.

It will if it shows up and you haven't disclosed it.
