Maternity Pay tax

Wife is currently on maternity leave from a large energy company. She will be paid full salary for 6 months and then SMP after that. If she chooses not to go back after then company terms are such that she has to pay them back the difference between the full pay she received for the first 6 months and the SMP she would have had in that period had she declared her intention not to return up front.
As I understand it she will have to repay them gross having already paid tax on that income - given it will then be the following tax year from that in which she paid the tax, is there any way she could recover this as she will not have any further taxable income in that year against which to offset?
