temp workers rights to a perm contract?

If you are a temporary worker, is it correct that your employer must give you a permanent contract after a certain period of time? Or can they keep you on a temp contract indefinitely?
I'm sure I heard this a while ago, would like to know if it is true or a load of waffle!

I think you can be temporary for years and the employer has no need to give you a permanent contract. I maybe wrong but i am sure there be someone better qualified than myself along in no time.0

I'm sure I heard this a while ago, would like to know if it is true or a load of waffle! After 2 years (I think, may be one yr), you become entitled to certain employment rights but there is no entitlement to a permenant contract unless you have applied for a permenant position and been the successful candidate.

Hope this helps, I've worked with people who have been on numerous contracts with one company. Often a contract ends then another starts in a different department, can go on for years.

My understanding is that if you've had a series of uninterrupted fixed term contracts then the position is deemed to be permanent if the contract is renewed after you've been with the employer for four years. It's covered by the Fixed term empolyees less favourable treatment regulations.0 -
Temporary contracts can go on indefinitely. some people have been employed through an agency with a major employer in my area for over 5 years. The employer prefers to recruit though an agency paying their candidates £7.00 per hour rather then take them on permanentlly paying £11.00 per hour like their existing permanent employees,Wonder why ??? :eek:0

Could we start off with - what does anyone mean by a temporary contract? What you rights are or may be deepnds on whether you are a "temp" through an agency or on a temporary employee employed directly by an employer.0

They are probably paying the agency the extra £4 an hour or close to it. Don't forget the employees wage is not what the employer pays the agency.0 -
It depends on what contract you have.
If you are through an agency as a 'temp' worker, then no, you have no rights. If you are employed by the employer as a 'temp' on a fixed-term contract, then yes, you have rights after four years to a permanent contract.
However, if you are employed by the employer, on a fixed-term contract, your contract type makes very little difference after the first year anyway , as you have exactly the same rights as a permanent employee, and a non-renewal of your fixed-term contract equates to dismissal.

Doesn't take an Einstein to work that one out, but as you say very nice that over a third of the salary they could potentially earn is going to Middlemen.:eek:0
