What's the least amount of money you could feed one person on for a week?

I am looking at my purse and feeling LOUSY! I have only £5.00 to last me all week and the cupboards are soo bare.

I'm sure there are people on here who are very smart when it comes to buying food that costs little and lasts a long time.

What's the least you could feed yourself on, or have fed someone on? What did you buy and/or make?

If anyone wants to make any recommendations, I'm happy to hear them! Just to let you know I am a semi veggie in that I started eating fish again a few years back, but no other meat- I'm very active, like to eat Healthy and am happy to cook!

Really interested though in how little you have managed to spend on a weeks shopping!

    Hmmm... tricky.

I live alone and feed myself just fine. Having only recently discovered OS though I'm still learning. I spent £23 last Monday and am still eating what I brought. I made a veg soup which lasted 3 days and then a potato, leek, cheese and onion bake thing which lasted another 3. Just depends how bored you get with keep eating the same things! I also brought 3 pizzas from Asda for £1.20 I think, the veggie one was particularly nice!

Let us know how you get on. Good luck.

  • In my poor days, I used to buy a chicken for a roast on a Sunday. Use the left-over chicken on Monday in a white sauce (flour/butter/milk) to make Chicken á la King or Chicken Fricaseé, with rice. That would last at least 3 days. Meanwhile, I would boil the carcass with vegetables to make a soup for the rest of the week. :)

Well, to judge by the responses to the '50p meal' thread, you could do your 7 dinners for about £1.75 all in, to kick off with!

    (IF you have cooking facilities)

I just read that post too and couldn't believe how much I have to learn.

  • OOOh that sounds very handy! Thanks all.

I can eat the same thing all week and not get bored of it. As long as it's not the same thing the week AFTER that too! I often make a form of spag bol(with beans and small amounts of vege mince) and eat it all week.

I'll be running to that thread now...!

Today I bought some soups on special offer- 3 cans for a pound. And some vege ravioli also on special- 3 for a pound. Several meals there, not sure how healthy although the vege soups surely are!

You could add some pasta to the soup and sprinkle a bit of grated cheese on top to add some extra protein and taste.

you know i think the huge bags of pasta you get from asda are a fantastic deal for £1.00 .. they last for ages and really im happy eating pasta with bits and bobs for a week! Passata is much cheaper than most stir through sauces and that includes the passata that has garlic and herbs in (if you dont have spices/puree etc at home already).throw in some frozen veg/chopped ham/sausage/chicken.. anything really and i find that a very cheap week.. off to read the 50p meal thread too now! :D
    I LOVE MSE! :money:
  • Asda do their own version of 'Beanfeast' - dried veggie bolognese type stuff. Usually with the dried beans, cous cous etc. The savoury one is about 60p a pack, add potatoes and make a shepherds pie, will make 2 big portions.

Basic veggie pasta sauce - fry an onion, once soft add a grated carrot and fry for a couple more mins (any other veggies are great too), then add in a tin of chopped toms and simmer til it thickens up a bit. The carrot sounds strange but is actually quite nice, and it makes a lovely filling healthy sauce for pasta.

Chilli - veggie mince if you can get it (£1 a bag and makes 5 or more meals for us), beans, sweetcorn, carrots/other veggies etc. At it's cheapest, 20p of soya mince, 17p kidney beans, 15p(ish) sweetcorn, 10p carrots, 30p tinned toms - less than a pound for several meals. Serve with rice/jacket potato/in tacos etc.

If you have a 'Heron' or other cheap frozen foods place near you, look out for the Dalepack veggie stuff, tend to be able to get their veggie burgers/grills etc from about 50p a pack. Iceland have these on special offer often too. Serve with cheap veggies (baked beans, peas, sweetcorn etc) and home made oven chips (just chop up spuds, coat lightly in oil, cook in oven til done!).

Veggie Stew/Soup - any variation of veggies really. Our basic one is just onions, carrots, potatoes, beans, adding in green beans/celery/peppers/sweetcorn/etc - whatever's available. The 'sauce' is just veggie stock cubes or gravy powder. Serve with bread and butter, really warm and filling and healthy!

Pasta and Pesto is pretty cheap, especially if you look around the bargain shops for cheap pesto. I add in sweetcorn, maybe some roasted veg etc if available. Very quick and easy.
