19 Years Old - Help

Hi All,

I have been reading these forums for the past year but never got round to signing up.
I am 19 year old and have been working at my current job as an Account Exec for nearly 3 years. The past year I have been considering moving on and trying something new. I feel as though I have missed out on 3 years of being a teenager and feel as though I am missing out on something.
I know that I am lucky to have a job in the current climate and don't take for granted, which is one of the reason why I have stayed on.
I would love to do something that involes travelling or something that isn't sat in an office doing the same thing everyday. I have tried searching online for career ideas but can't find anything that lists unusual and exciting jobs.
Basically I wondering whether anyone had any advice or ideas?
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks :)

What is an account exec? Sales?

If so, how about some kind of field sales? You'd need a driving licence tho.

Why do you feel that you have "missed out" on being a teenager? do you have losts of friends who are students or something?

If you want to go travelling, just do it. Pick up random jobs on the way around.

Probably better asking on the student forums, there are plenty of them around, and they have plenty of topics just like this!

Oh, if you're looking for unusual jobs on the internet, you'll never find one, you have to be there at the right time in the right place.

    Hi,
Account exec is customer service type role, doesn't involve sales. It's not something I really want to get in to as I think if i wanted to the company im with would allow me to go in that direction. I have a driving licence, all my friends are students experiencing the student lifestyle, When i say missed out I mean that I feel like there was so much stuff I Could have done before getting a full time job and now I don't see a way back out to try those things. I'm scared that If I don't do something now I may look back in a few years time and regret no doing anything about it.

I would like to travel abroad, there's so much out there that I want to see just don't know how to do it without finding a job that involves that.

Thanks, I will check out some student forums this afternoon. I did look into going just travelling and picking up odd jobs however I was hoping for a full time job that could involve this as I know that I can't go travelling all my life. :)

if you are good with numbers look into training to become a croupier(but not a course where you pay)

after a year (if good enough) there are plenty of jobs on cruise ships etc

    Hi Matt,

If you want to go travelling then just do it. You’ll regret it if you don’t. It’s not worth staying in a mediocre job when you are young, if you want to go. Especially if you have no other ties, like a partner, kids, mortgage ect.

If you are really worried about having nothing to come back to, can you not ask your employers for a career break of 6 months?

In terms of a career change, it seems to be like you really are having a stab in the dark here, you need to know yourself what you want to do. Why don’t you go see a careers councillor for a few ideas? Would you be willing to go to uni or college? (Which tbh is prob going to be required for a total change of direction)

    Good luck!

matt if you want to travel abroad then do it for a few months, if you want a job travelling the uk then maybe a job as a field merchandiser is a good idea but you need a drivers licence and own transport so maybe not a good idea

    Matt,
The grass is always greener on the other side...as the saying goes.

Look at it this way, your friends will come out of University with a huge debt which takes them years to clear. Now, you are working and earning money. I don't know your personal/financial circumstances but I assume you have no debts. You have the chance to build a life for yourself, buy a house, a car, get experience and better job. University while being fun, really doesn't give you everything you want when you reach your 30s.

You really need to sit and decide what it is you want out of life. If it's important to go to Uni and have fun for 3 years then do it. But remember, in order for it to be worth your while you also have to work hard. University is not all play.
