costs of insurance are going to be big for his first car regardless of how low the insurance group is, around the £1000 mark, so be prepared!

I have tried getting some quotes with possible cars, and putting his father and myself on the policy as named drivers does make a BIG difference!
As RTNI states above if your son is not named as the named driver, when he should be, the insurance could be invalid. Be warned.

NAR, I read Heather's post as saying her son would be the policy holder with mum and dad as named drivers on the policy.

I only posted for clarification as her post does not state this clearly.

I can confirm that my son will be the main policyholder with his father and I as named drivers simply to help bring down the cost with some ( not all! ) companies!

I have to say that both my kids started off with Micras -- the Mk2 rounded one. They seems to be incredibly reliable, pretty rust resistant and there are still thousands on the road. Spares are cheap (I needed to replace a few wing mirrors) and servicing is reasonable. I can only recall one issue -- a short behind one of the headlamps -- other than routine items like tyres and brakes. If I was skint and needed a runabout, I would get one today. Quite reasonable to drive, even for a tall person, and cheap insurance.

They are very reasonable. Click here for an example 02 low mileage.
