What's wrong with it? I'm assuming it's out of warranty - but is it something you could get Sky to do? They charge £65 but you can often wriggle out of that.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

Give sky a ring, we have had a Sky+ box since they first came out and have never had to pay to have them fixed. I refuse to take out extra warranty when my hubby can ring up and sweet talk them. Well actually he tells them we have the top sky package, been with them years etc etc & if they won't send an engineer out to fix or replace the box he will cancel our subscription.....works every time:rotfl: :rotfl::coffee:0

Another good trick is to email james.murdoch@sky.com personally. Surprisingly, they respond very well to that (I say surprisingly because that email address is so well known that you might as well be emailing customer services)Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

you probably are .. it is highly unlikely that Rupes ever loks at that mail box .. many companies have this sort of thingmagyar wrote:Another good trick is to email james.murdoch@sky.com personally. ivanI don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!0 -
Its a very simple problem really, the centre pin of the coaxial (RF2) socket has come out, I can push it back in but the picture is unstable, touching the box can knock it off.
Does anyone know if the whole coaxial unit is detachable, I could but a faulty sky box on ebay and swap them over!0 -

Appreciate that, Ivan, what I meant was it's surprising you tend to get a faster and better reaction if you go via that route - rather than the accursed Sky Customer Services... (I would have expected them to go "oh God, someone else thinking they're emailing James Murdoch... forward to Customer Services...")
I got a new Sky+ box (when out of warranty) within two days by using that email address. Using the phone took far longer and meant I had to argue my case over and over to loads of different people.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

It might be repairable, but if you get a Sky bloke to come out you'll almost certainly get a brand new box for your troubles (+ min 3 month warranty).
Plus, do you have an old Sky box? If so you're very likely to get a PVR3, which has twice the storage space, so actually even if you pay the £65 it's a good deal.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world

Phone Sky and tell them about your problem, they will then tell you about charges for the engineer etc, etc, and say you cannot afford it and you want to cancel. They will proceed to say they will give you it cheaper, but say your not paying anything and you will end up with a brand new box for free.SandLake wrote:Anyone know where I can get a Sky+ box repaired, close to Antrim would be good0 -
Can agree with all other posters. Phone them and say at the outset you wish to cancel. When they ask why just say your box is broken and you can't afford to get fixed (Christmas expenses etc.).
You'll not get a new box but it will be refurbished and fit for purpose.0 -

Can I just add, I wouldn't use the line "can't afford to get it fixed" - Sky are not in the business of being nice to people. Stick with the "I WILL cancel", even if you have to go through with cancelling (they often push you to the brink), but will rarely let someone go. The more your monthly subscription is, the more likely you are to get it free. If you get the premium channels (Movies, Sports etc) you're a gimme.
And you can get a new box sometimes (although IvanWilson is right, it is usually a refurb). What I would suggest is this: the usual procedure is for the Sky engineer to phone earlier in the day to confirm the time he's coming. Be frank at this point and ask him what you'd like. General opinion is that the best boxes are Pace/Thompson PVR3, not the Amstrad ones. Chances are, if he's got one he can give you, he will (as most people aren't choosy). Just depends what he's got in the van.Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
