nails-ridges

Hi

Would like some advice please regarding my nails.
I use to bite them but have now stopped, they are looking nice and long now apart from the horrible ridges.
I mentioned it to my doctor and a blood test has ruled out any problems.
Do anyone know what causes them?
And any way of getting rid of them.

Thank you.

I've always assumed vertical ridges are normal, and that's what they are smoothing off with the file thing when you get your nails done. Mine have always had visible vertical ridges.

I've never been to have my nails done as i've bit mine on and off.
But i'd never noticed them this bad, mine look really horrible like an elderly person's (no offence) and i'm only 37.
I have tried the nail file but can't seem to get them smooth.

I have a similar problem with mine, and I'm younger than you! I find that filing them makes them weak. I read somewhere that it could be down to dry nail plates or something and that applying oil along the nail/skin edge would reduce the ridges. I haven't actually tried this out so cannot say whether it does or does not work. I'm more inclined to think its a dietary thing although I'm not sure what! To reduce the appearance of mine I apply basecoat nail varnish which is a transparent milky colour, it does a good job of making my nails look at little better.

I will be watching this thread with interest in the hope that someone will come up with an answer/solution!
  • Vertical ridges are more common as you get older. Smoothing with a nail file will not get rid of them, you need to try to find and eliminate the cause. There are many theories about what might cause them. The common ones are a lack of nutrients (particularly vitamin B12) and a lack of hydration. You could try maintaining a nutrient-rich diet and keeping your nails hydrated with a hand and nail lotion. In homeopathic medicine vertical ridges are thought to be an indication of low liver energy so you could investigate this also, particularly if you regularly consume alcohol.
