I am in a job that I loathe...and need to get out of it for my sanity....long time since i've been job hunting...
Do you register with every recruitment company in belfast or is there somewhere you just upload your details and hope for the best. I have looked on jobcentreonline and nijobs.com
i am looking for a job in admin or Office work or receptionist.....

To my knowledge there's no reliable website in which you put your details and wait for employers to phone you - the hunt for work is really up to you.

You need a strategy to get a new job. Draw up a weekly schedule listing what you will do and when. Eg Monday - register with 2 agencies
Tuesday - buy local paper and get application forms
Wednesday - chase all agencies registered with; go through jobcentreonline.com, nijobs etc etc and apply for all promising leads
Thursday - fill in application forms and put in the post; look in News Letter/ Irish News/ other papers
Friday - have a follow up chat with agencies which may have anything interesting to say on Wednesday. Look at company websites just in case they haven't advertised in the papers or via agencies.

Then repeat for however many weeks it takes to get out of wherever you are.

The idea is that your job search is always active and you feel that you are giving yourself the best chance of getting a new job. Also mention to people you know that you'd like to change job and if they know of anything, or how to go about applying for jobs in their workplace.

Do develop a thick skin when dealing with agencies. They are sales people and ultimately work for their clients rather than for you...as long as they get a client paying them it's neither here nor there who the candidate is. But do be polite with them - they are human too. It's worth looking at agency websites as lots of them have branches around the country and it's possible something could come up which your local branch thought would be inconvenient for you.

I really like the schedule idea Snowyowl, sounds great.I am in a similar position to the op and will be watching this thread with interest. My problem is that I have a well paid job but it entails early mornings/late nights and weekend work. I ideally want to go somewhere which will pay me similar monaey but be Monday to Friday... I am a senior manager within a large retailer and feel trapped by the golden handcuffs.. I too have been trawling the jobsites but am struggling to find one which may cater to my needs. Would any of the agencys have a professional division which may be able to help or does anyone know any websites that they would recommend?

    Many thanks in advance.. :)

Thank you! This approach really worked for me when I was "between jobs" as it meant that I had things to do every day, even if it didn't take all day. I got a job - temporary unfortunately - but in one of the very best and biggest companies in NI and fingers crossed they will keep me on. Good luck with your job search - it's hard at the moment to find anything, but not impossible, so keep at it.

Maybe you could try to get a Mon to Friday job within the firm you work for now. Grass is greener etc.

This goes for the OP as well. Your disatifaction with your present job might be resolved easily by talking to your boss or a move sideways within the firm if it is a big firm. Most firms will try very hard to keep people as getting replacements can be a very disruptive and expensive process.

Best wishes in whatever you decide.

Unfortunately when it gets to the level the OP is refering to it really is time to move on. I was in a job for 5 years up to recently, the first 2 years were great, the middle year OK and the last 2 years terrible. That was my biggest regret - not leaving before the last 2 years. I left that job for a job with the exact same salary but what has actually turned out to be more relevant to my profession and less crap.

I think the OP has got some good sound advice about the way to treat the search. My only suggestion is to apply directly for roles as well as registering for agencies, research the company you want to join. You would be surprised how showing an interest in the background of the company alone could be enough to get you in the door.
