Pawnbrokers - can I redeem?

Hi, I stupidly lent a friend a piece of jewellery with huge sentimental attachment. We had a falling out and he's mailed me the pawn docket which has yet to arrive at home. If I get an authority letter signed by him giving me express permission to collect the jewellery without the docket, will this be accepted by the pawnbroker? I will provide the pawnbroker with a copy of his driving licence too for identification purposes.

Why can't he retrieve the item and then deliver it to you?:hello:0

Ask the pawnbroker?0 -
they won't release it to you , the agreemnet is signed by the other person , most take photo's of the person who pawned the item and will only release it to them , you need your friend to do it or go with youEx forum ambassador

Sadly, he's not speaking to me anymore and its been difficult enough to get the docket out of him. He posted it at the start of last week and considering we live less than 2 miles away from each other I'm guessing the docket has gone astray and I hope that someone else hasn't cashed the docket in?! I know he's definitely posted it. I've semi coerced him into signing a letter to the pawnbrokers to confirm that the docket appears to have been lost, attaching a copy of his driving licence and giving me full authority to redeem. Do you think that might work? Thanks for all your help!0

I would be very shocked if they let you have it but the best person to ask surely is the pawnbroker ?
What proof do you have that this item is yours ?
What proof do you have that you did not force your mate to hand over his driving licence etc ?
I am not saying you are doing anything wrong but it would not be the first time a loan shark took a driving licence / passport and those could then be used for anything.There is a race of men that don't fit in; A race that can't stand still;
So they break the hearts of kith and kin, and roam the world at will.

Why did he pawn it in the first place? Did he have your permission? Do you have anything to prove ownership prior to him taking it to the shop?
It would be easier for him to get the item back himself and then give it to you - why is this not possible? You are communicating by post - he could get it and then post it (special delivery).:hello:0 -
Thanks for all the replies - its been very helpful. I now have an authority letter signed by him plus his original driving licence so I can invoke Section 118 of the Consumer Credit Act which states that as long as you have authority to redeem and you complete a statutory declaration, you should be able to retrieve the item (I hope).0

Sorry I should have added to my post. I have the original bill of sale in my name for the piece, plus photos of the item in question and any of my friends can vouch for me wearing and owning the item. I gave the brooch to my friend in good faith to pawn as long as he gave me the docket back to redeem (we've done this many times before). This time we've just had a falling out over the docket which is probably somewhere in the Royal Mail system.0

Sorry but that sounds like a system that was doomed to failure before all this other stuff came out. :eek:
Still nowt as queer as folk I guess."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0
