O2 messed up my credit report and never contacted me!! HELP!

I recently took advantage of the free credit expert trial, and it bought something to light.
It says that in Oct and Nov 2005 I had an arrangement to pay, which I met, and it shows the account as settled in Dec 2005, which is correct. I have had no futher correspondance since this time, and the phone had been disconnected, no problem I thought.
However, in Jan 2006 it shows 1 month unpaid, going to 6 months unpaid in June and July, and settled again in August. As I said I have had no correspondance from O2 regarding this whatsoever.
My credit report has the odd 2 months of arrangement to pays here and there, and the odd 1 month in arrears, but thats it. This 6 months of arrears is very damaging to my report
I wrote to O2s customer services, and they say that:
"Our credit and risk team have written off the debt however the adverse information is correct and will not be removed as you were fully aware of the arrears".
As I say, I received no correspondance from O2 about this... what shall I do now?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Tom, I have experienced a similar thing with O2 and would also welcome any advice... a few years ago (about 3 actually) I cancelled my contract with O2 and had a letter from them confirming at it was cancelled and that the balance was zero. However, a few months later I received a nitice from them saying that I owe them £32 which I rang them and told them about the first letter they sent me stating the zero balance... they went away for a while. After 3 or 4 letters backwards and forwards telling me I STILL owe them money and me telling them otherwise, all went quiet. That was until I checked my credit report this year and see a DEFAULT on there from O2 for this £32!!!!!!!!!!!
I contacted O2 re the default and they say they will not remove it because the information is correct. I asked them for proof of the default and they sent me a load of rubbish that doesn't even relate to my account with them! Now they are disputing that this default is not for the account I cancelled but for the account I opened on the same day as the account I cancelled!
confused? I was!! ...it seems that in their 'wisdom' somehow they accidentally opened a brand new account for me at the same time as cancelling my account and the £32 is the first months line rental prior to the account being discovered and subsiquently cancelled by them!
At NO POINT did O2 contact be to advise me of the default notice and at NO POINT did I authorise a new account with them
...what now?! If you don't want to know my opinion, don't ask for it!0 -
Nice to see I'm not the only one, it seems the only difference between us is that I received NOTHING from O2 whatsoever.
One thing I know for sure is that I will not let this one drop until the information is removed. I'm disgusted at O2 for doing this, and I'm sure my ignorance to this being on my file resulted in me paying a much higher interest rate on a loan, thus costing me a lot more money.
