ARGHHHHH Car Tax.

I thought I had a good thing going when I sold my 2 litre MR2 beast and bought a little 1.1 Suzuki Alto 03. Cheaper motoring I thought!!!!!!

Car tax for this year for the MR2 would have been £218.
So I knew I would be saving with the new car I bought.

But I was shocked when I went to the DVLA in Manchester to find that tax for my new car for the year would be £160.

For god sake it's a 1.1, if I get up to 70 I rattle in the damn thing lol.

I know I have saved all round, cheaper tax and insurance, but I think £160 for the year is quite steep!!!!!

There is no £160 tax band. Do you mean £165?

£165 would mean CO2 emissions of 151-165 g/km, which seems unlikely for such a piddly little car!

Do you know the CO2 emission for your car? If you don't know, could you PM the registration number to me and I'll look it up.

Edit: I've just checked. There are two types of Alto that year, each with different CO2 emissions:
    1.1 GL/GLS 5-door From VIN MA3FFB21S00144416 has 112g/km
    whereas
    1.1 GL(A)/GLS(A) 5-door From VIN MA3FFB21S00151669 has 152g/km
Your car must be the (A) version, which costs £165!!

Just received your PM and £165 is correct. Emissions are 152g/km, so band G.

I assume your car is automatic? This model appears to have considerably higher emissions than the manual.

Yeah, she is an auto. Thanks for the above info, looks like I will have to live with it.

    Oh, that is awful.

I have the exact same worry in that if I have to get rid of my automatic Fiesta for something cheaper and smaller due to bankruptcy, I have no idea if the newer sub £1k car would cost less :(

You can check the car tax cost of any car you are considering purchasing here:

Just be careful to get the exact engine, trim etc - as shown by the example above, there can be big variations in emissions within a model of car. :(
