Has anyone heard of/used the shopping club?

Today's offer from groupon (in my area) is for a discounted membership of the shopping club
http://www.groupon.co.uk/deals/milton_keynes?nlp=&CID=UK_CRM_45_0_0_0&utm_source=Deal_general_newsletter&utm_medium=All_Cities&utm_content=Initial_Version&utm_campaign=Varies

There website shows that you can get discounts on your shopping in various ways
http://www.theshoppingclub.co.uk/index.html

I probably wouldn't bother if it was the original £29.95 but as the deal is for £10 for membership I'm tempted. Has anyone used them before? and is it worth it?

thanks

  • Just seen this and very tempted too! I looked on the website though and there seemed to be a few added costs for postage and packing - £1.99 per delivery of shopping cards, vouchers, etc.

Any able to advise if it is a good scheme?

I looked into it when a family member was conned into joining, it cost them a fortune & was a waste of time & money

I hadn't spotted the charge for P&P - thank you

Thanks Hester, with that feedback and the realisation they charge P&P for the various things to be sent out I think I'll give it a miss

    cheers

I see you have made your mind up but I have moved this to shopping and groceries anyway to see if you get any other points of view

Thanks for the feedback. Had been asking about this on another thread. Hadn't noticed the p&p. You have just saved me £10

I've just had this offer from Groupon (its on their Coventry/Warks link today). I wouldn't really bother at the full price of £29.95 but at £10 (with £12 credit in my Groupon account to cover it), I think it's worth trying it out.

Yes, the costs are a little off putting but I think the discounts are still worth having.

    For example;

    ASDA offer 4% off shopping - assuming a weekly shop of £100 that's a £4 saving.

The scheme charges £1.99 for delivery of the card (you only pay this once as it's reloadable).
They also charge £1.99 per transaction to charge your card by debit card. (2% by credit card so much less attractive).

So, on a single weekly top-up of £100 you don't actually gain.

But, if you top-up your card once a month for £500 you save £18 off your shopping every month at ASDA.

That's £216 per year saved simply by shopping at the same place I am going to shop anyway. Then, add in any Asda Price Guarantee savings too.

If someone came up and offered you £200 would you turn it down?

There are a LOT of shops available on their site, so it has to be worth a try at the promo Groupon rate of £10 surely?

    Paul

    ADDED

Just looked at the 4% fuel discounts offered.

You buy vouchers at £1.99 per delivery, plus 50p debit card charge per order.

Order £200 of vouchers at a time and save £8, then deduct £2.50 charges.

That works out at a 2.75% discount off your fuel (£5.50 off every £200).

Again, if you spend £200/month on fuel at your local ASDA, Morrisons, Sainsbury then you save £66/year just for filling up where you're probably filling up anyway.

The site states you can still use the in-store offers as well as the vouchers, so it won't affect the 5ppl (when you spend £x instore) offers the supermarkets often promote.

I was tempted by this but so glad I thought to check here first. Sounds like it's too much hassle to be worth it.
    Thanks for saving me £10

"too much hassle to be worth it"

No wonder this Country is in the state it's in - everyone wants everything for nothing and with no effort.

    1) Join for £10
    2) Order shopping card and pay to credit it by debit card
    3) Card arrives
    4) Use it in ASDA to pay at checkout just as you would cash or card
    5) Every now and again claim the cashback

If THAT is too much hassle then please let me know all the schemes which can save me £200+ a year with less hassle.

I'm not saying this is the Holy Grail of shopping but it can prove worthwhile.

I only focussed on one shop, but there are plenty of others and many have less "hassle" to participate.
