Telling Armed Forces Im Bankrupt

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction or may have experience on this themselves.
Ive served in the Royal Navy for 10 years this year. 2 years ago me and my wife went bankrupt together. It was a big choice but we took lots of advice, and in all honesty it was such a relief once complete.
I never told the RN about this as 1) didnt want everyone knowing my business 2) Wasnt aware if i needed to.
Anyway i have a loan from the Navy that i used to buy my flat 5 years ago (not much and interest free) it wasnt included in the bankruptcy and the OR knew about it (the money was taken from my wage monthly) I received a questionnaire today regarding the loan to ask some simple questions. one of the questions asked if i have ever been made bankrupt/Insolvent.
I dont want to lie on the form incase it bites me in the !!! but on the other hand i want to know what to expect if the Navy do fine out
Any advice welcome:beer:

I would say that you need to be honest with them but explain you thought you didnt need to tell them as the loan was deducted from your wages monthly and that you genuinely only thought to tell them because of the mention of it on the questionaire.
They will find out sooner or later if you intend on staying for the rest of your career. Im in a similar position (I have not yet gone BR but considering it) and my job requires me to tell them - its difficult as there is always a possibility of disciplinary issues.0 -
You have no choice but to answer yes to this question.:pB&SC No. 298

Thanks for replying.
Not planning on lying on the form, just wanted to know if anyone knew what the aftermarth would be if i told them.
The questionaire is supposed to be completed every 6 months but ive only just been asked to complete one after 5 years.
I am considering not filling out the form and see if anyone asks for it again because i am worried. I have good reports and expect to be on the promotion signal next year if not this, and dont want something like this to ruin it.
i'll hand the form in Monday probably and see what happens0 -

The Divisional System, looks at how the individual handles any debt problems.
In your case you have kept a very serious financial problem to yourself.
The powers that be who deal with your SC (and DV - if held) will take a very dim view of your cover up.
You may be on the signal. But if you don't tell them and they find out it is possible you will be discharged SNLR. Goodbye pension.0 -
Have you experienced this or known anyone? Or is this just an educated guess?
Ive never known anyone have financial circumstances written into a report, and when i write reports i dont look at this(not to say it isnt done by 2nd RO)
I was more worried about being placed on a career check
Thanks for your input on this0 -
You need to speak to your DO first thing Monday morning, don't let them find out by reading the form. It is not about them knowing your business, it is about your SC.0

No problem Dog21. I have not experienced this personally, but have mentored in the past, someone in my Division who had a similar problem to yours.
MoD would see you through your Bankruptcy more susceptible to blackmail and/or bribery.
They favour people (and I'm sure you must see this, deep down) who are up front and honest.
Take the advice as provided by Johnnyd281 and talk to your D.O. You have done nothing to be ashamed of in the big scheme of things, and I know you coming clean would be seen as a positive step.
Whatever you decide shipmate, good luck.0 -
Cheers lads.
Will try and find my DO on Monday. Got more chance of finding rocking horse !!!!!! though haha.
Witchfinder, did the rest of the squadron find out or was it kept under wraps when you did your mentoring? I know its easy to find out if you want to but i cant imagine my oppos looking lol0 -

No one found out about it. However, I it was mentioned that his oppo's were questioning why he was off to see his D.O. so often.
It's up to you what you say. Nothing is leaked from behind the closed door session with your D.O. - I hope integrity has not gone the way of our old traditions.
I know you will feel a whole lot better about yourself after you let them know.0 -
Nice one. Thanks0
