University tuition fee headache

Hi All,
I have just been searching for hours on the internet with no avail on this one, so i was wondering if someone might be able to shed some light on where i stand with the following matter.
I left university 3 years ago, after staying less than a week i decided to leave. Notified my accomodation, handed my keys in, gave my loan back and sent an email to the relevant person to confirm my resignation from the university.
yesterday i have received a £1,500 bill for my supposed tuition fees. The uni is saying they have had no contact for me and have not had me down as not attending the university.
To my understanding tuition fees are generally used to pay for the said students tuition, however having not received any tuition from the university i find this highly confusing as to what i am actually paying for.
I no longer have copies of the email sent (due to it being 3 years ago) so i have come to a slight dead end.
can anyone offer some advice on this on where i stand?
Thanks all,
Sabrina
