Armed Forces Preserved Pensions - Less Than 12 yrs Service

I don't know if this information has ever been posted before but answering another thread it came to me that I've not seen it on the site. It is very important though that anyone who has served in the armed forces for less than 12 years becomes aware of it.

If you have served two years or more in any branch of the forces but less than 12 (if my memory serves me right) you are entitled to claim a Preserved Pension when you hit age 60. Earlier if you are a disabled veteran in receipt of a pension of 60% or more from the SPVA.

If you qualify on either of the above and haven't claimed your pension you should contact one of the following for advice.

1. Your OCA
2. The RBL
3. The SPVA
4. SSAFA

I also think you may get some info from Manning & Records in Glasgow.

You won't get any paperwork for this when you leave. For some reason it seems to be a well kept secret but it is your money and you should claim it. It may only be £100 a month but everything helps.

NOTE: UDR & Royal Irish (Home Service) full time are also entitled to this. If you were part-time however you will not receive it unless you had two years or more full time service in total, even if it is split.

I left in 2008 and got sent a letter to keep until I am 60 (so I am expected to keep this letter for nearly 30 years) which highlights my entitlement etc.
Here to learn and pass on my experiences.
Had a total of £8200 of debt written off due to harassment during 2010 and 2012.

Service up to 2006 is payable at 60, for service after 2006 that part is normally payable at 65 but can be paid at a reduced rate at 60.

Never associate with idiots on their own level, because, being an intelligent man, you'll try to deal with them on their level - and on their level they'll beat you every time.

Being hated by idiots is the price you pay for not being one of them.

Keeping the letter is one option but you don't need it to claim your preserved pension.

I guessed that but the letter does not make it clear, it hints the letter must be kept :D (least from what I remember when I read it 2 years ago) :rotfl:

Yes it does but I know for a fact you don't need it. M&R have your service details and that's what counts.
