Katykat, I would say 'wear & tear' through your work IS a work-related injury. Many people in my industry (civil engineering) suffer from incremental injuries such as damaged hearing and Hand Arm Vibration damage. Both accumulated over many years, but both attributable to their employment.
In your case, the damage to your spine could be incremental damage resulting from your employer exposing you to hazards over a long period of time, without properly assessing the risks and witohut providing an alternative way of doing a job with a lower risk or lower exposure to the same hazard.
Just because you work in the medical sector doesn't mean that you have to be damaged by it.
