Given that (with respect) working on a supermarket checkout is not going to be the most high-flying career around, paying off over £8K of debt in a year must really take some doing.
You can get a useable ten year old car for < £500 (mine's worth maybe £400 and works just fine, but then I'm reasonably handy, and have a relative who's a mechanic) and something really pretty decent, albeit ordinary for £3K. Given that you've managed to payoff that much debt in a year, then surely you can learn to drive, and pay for a car (and insurance as if you're a new driver this will be pricey), without taking out a loan.
You can probably ease off on the overtime if it's burning you out, and still do enough to pay cash. Why do an intensive course - it's not that cheap. Whilst you learn to drive the old fashioned way, you can work, build up your savings and when you've passed your test, hopefully the money will be there to byu a car.
I bought a brand-new (motor)bike for cash recently (good time of year to buy for bargain hunters), and it feels a lot better when your bank a/c doesn't to have a hole in the bottom, leaking money, when the loan repayment goes out every month.
However, given how much determination you've shown to change your life, perhaps you could look at some wider, less prosaic, life ambitions and how you might achieve those, it coming up to New Year and all that.0 -
