DFW's might be interested in this story in the papers about "financial infidelity" (in other words lying about what you're spending to your partner):

My husband and I keep our finances very separate and I can't imagine being happy with a joint account. Most of our married friends do and it works for them but we're happy the way we are. I wouldn't even consider lying to him about how much I paid for something but then it's my money anyway so he wouldn't judge. It's not an issue these days as I bargain-hunt everything but I wouldn't lie if I had a little splurge...Debt at highest May 2006: £27,472.24
currently: £13,353.25DFW Nerd 178Proud to be dealing with my debts0 -
well I'm thinking people who do this kind of thing are really pre-lightbulb moment anyway cos I certainly wouldn't expect any DFWs to be going out spending £300 on shoes!! I just thought the issue might interest people on this forum0

It struck me that most of the quotes on there were from people with debts on credit cards or the like - I guess if they cant be honest with themselves about thier overspending they have no hope of telling a loved one

We have a joint acc for the bills & seperate accounts for our wages to go into - I dont know what hubby earns to be honest & I dont think he knows what I earn, but we talk about what we spend. No moaning or anything (well no often  ) I cant wait to show him the latest bargains I've bought! :AI THINK is a whole sentence, not a replacement for I KnowSupermarket Rebel No 19:T0 -
it is about people with debts on credit cards & etc - people who haven't faced up to their debt. I wondered if it said anything about the whole mentality of getting further and further into debt for some people, perhaps most, that it involves an element of self-deception and so an element of deceiving others0

We have a joint account for bills and the rest is our own but i don't feel the need to lie to my DH about my spending on clothes etc. I don't say "I spent £46 on these shoes today" but if he notices (and he is a bloke so he doesn't usually) I don't mind telling him.0

I wouldn't expect anyone on this forum to think the pattern of spending described in the story reflects what they themselves do!! the story's really about how people get themselves INTO debt to start with0
