I've just received 4GB Black from the Apple refurb store, how can I tell what version of the player this is?

If its black and its 4gb then it is the old model. Simple as that

I bought a refurb white and black and both are bright but the white has better battery life but probably no worse than average.

Do you mean 1st vs. 2nd gen? There aren't any 2nd gen in the store as yet they're too new.
