Hi
Minced lamb is from Aldi at £1.99 for 1.5kg...so divided by 3 (500g) is £0.66p.
My local butcher sells 3 chickens for £9, but if you go down on a Saturday afternoon he sells at £6 for 3. I doubt they are free range or organic though, but taste lovely all the same:D
I dont often buy meat/fish/poultry for very much as OH tends to go to the shops in the evening when they have been yellow stickered and upto 95% off. Most of the reduced meat/poultry we buy is normally organic or free range. As stated in many posts before I can often buy organic sausages 6 for 20p (BargainRzl shops at the same Sainsburys and gets excellent buys too-so not making it up), organic chickens/pieces for 50p+, organic minced lamb/beef 250g for 20p....blah blah blah.
I agree with Edinburghlass here. I would rather pay for a decent food product and know I like it and eat it all than cutting to a cheaper brand and not eating it.
My recipes could be cut further using value cheap mince but we dont like that and would pay the extra (which we dont thanks to savvy shopping) for nicer tasting/quality mince.

So are you saying:
1. All cheap food is nasty.
or
2. You can't be bothered finding out which cheap foods are just as good/better than the expensive ones...???0 -

If you read through my posts from the past 2 years you will be able to see that I am all for value foods, but only the ones we like and we have tried them all...believe me:D
I shop between various stores and buy most of my tinned products from Aldi and still buy many cheaper products because they taste better and are better quality.
So in reply...NO to either of your comments!

So then you'd agree that the best combination is tasty AND cheap?... A point that hardly came out in your post..?0 -
I not sure what everyone else is getting at but do agree that the cost doesnt always mean that something is going to save you money, for example I find that if I buy cheap nappies I use twice as much of them so end up paying more in the long run...
the same with meat, i can buy really cheap 'tesco value' chicken breasts and need a pack of 4 to make a meal, whereas you buy two from a butcher and they will make a meal too, the difference with the ones from the butcher (apart from being more expensive of course!) is that they aren't injected with water to 'pump' them up, which means they don't shrink like the value ones do when cooked.
My way of thinking is that cheap isn't always nice, nor economical (in the sense of the examples above) but quite often it is possible to get things 'cheap' and that also taste nice!!Thats what I think of as 'moneysaving!' - hope this helps to give an idea??
Oh, and I also LOVE a bargain so always have immense satisfaction knowing that I got a BARGAIN!! So if I buy something at a cheaper price and know full well I can get practically the same item but pay more elsewhere, it always tastes MUCH better!!Official DFW Nerd 2100 -

I'm happy with the title of the site - moneysavingexpert.com - even if you aren't.
To the best of my knowledge, Martin has no plans for its re-naming as 'makethemostofwhatevermoneyyouhavebeitsmallorlargeamountsandbeasavvyconsumer.com'...
Cordial, calm down. I really think your post is quite rude and is not the way this site works. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm sure :money: would agree with E.Lass that we should get the best possilbe value for our money. Sometimes cheap is not best.
I asked Penny pincher how she got such cheap chickens. She didn't take offence that I was implying something else but gave me a good tip. Go see the butcher on Saturday afternoon. That's what this site is about. Passing on good tips to hopefully save you money. It's not about scrimping and buying the cheapest possible version. VFM is everything and we all measure value differently.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

One is totally and serenely calm. One merely pointed out that EL's post sounded more than somewhat snobby...0

Bacon Onion and Potato Pie
2 large Pots and 1 large onion and 4 slices of bacon does 2 people very well
Peel and slice potatoes, peel and slice onions.
Layer pots. in the bottom of ovenproof dish then a layer of onion rings/slices then 2 slices of bacon. Repeat and end with pots. Add a little milk over the top and bake in the oven quite slowly for about 45mins to 1 hour.
Absolutely delicious and VERY cheap!
I know a veggy version of this which we used to eat a lot when my kids were small and we were broke (although they still like it now). Its still known in our house by the name they gave it when small 'Moon Carrot Pie'
Ingredients: 2 large potatoes, few carrots (depends on size), onion, bit of cheese, 1/4 pt milk, salt & pepper to taste.
Peel and slice potatoes (not too thick). Peel and chop onion (small bits). Peel and grate carrots. Put onion in bottom of dish. Then layer of potato. Then layer of grated carrot. Continue to layer potato and carrot to near top of dish. Pour over milk and add salt & pepper to taste. Bung in microwave for 15 mins. Take out. Grate cheese over and put under hot grill until cheese melted. Cheap & quick
You can probably do it all in the oven but I've never tried.I live in my own little world. But it's okay. They know me here.0
