Past best before... plants/bulbs

Sainsburys were selling boxes of summer bulbs for £2.99, reduced to £1.50 with best before, 31/5. I meant to pop in last night for the final reductions but forgot.
In today and they were still there, so asked what the final reduction would be on them.
Apparently they can't be sold and need to be "disposed" of. I wasn't going to eat them!
