braun epilator-do I have to use guard?

I bought the silkepil 7 wet and dry epilator, and it seems OK, but it doesnt seem to pick up every hair. I did take the guard off yesterday and use it with just the head, and it was a little better-is that bad for it? Why am I supposed to use the guard?

Thanks for any answers :)

  • I've not used mine without the gaurd, but recently I pressed a bit harder as was fed up of missing hairs and ended up with quite a few sore bits and now have some scabs which i'm wishing would go so I can get my legs out again lol.

I might try this though, as long as you use little pressure don't see why it's a bad thing. someone may come along and say differet though.

I stopped using the head with the blade a long time ago though as I nearly always had hair growth and i wanted a true epilation. NOt using the blade gives me hair free legs for longer as they have all been plucked

I use my silkepil SoftPerfection without the guard with no problems, BUT it is a different model, and the instruction booklet says it's for more the more experienced user.

Not sure if this has been much help!

Is that what that plastic thing is??

I have a Braun Eplilator, never used the guard (is it the clear plastic thing shown here?) I managed fine on my legs, took out maybe 25% of my leg hair but I switched back to wax in the end. I did get alot of bleeding when I did my underarms which scared me off my bikini line (afraid of scars!) I wonder if this was why! If it was why I'd suggest using the guard for more delicate areas. Having said that I could never see how it worked with the guard, I did try but it didn't seem to get a single hair!

Maybe theres a technique to it that Braun need to share...

The guard is recommended for people who are starting out with epilating as it can be quite a shocking experience and very painful the first half a dozen times, if you are used to it and it isn't very painful then I would go ahead without the guard.

Also you will find that it wont pick up every hair on the first attempt, this is because hairs grow in cycles. The way you get past this problem is you epilate on day one, this should pick up most of the hairs, on day two you need not do anything, day three you epilate again which picks up any left overs with ease. You should have perfectly smooth legs if you follow this routine.

The guard is for newbies - so they learn how to use the epilator at the right angle for the best results

I have had a few Brauns and now Phillips which have many type of guards - some of them even say they are to be used to lift those lying flat hairs - none work as well as not using any guard.

As you get more confident you will find you dont need them
