Expenses

I am currently employed as a HGV1 Driver for a agency but am administrated for pay etc by a umbrella company.

My umbrella company allows me to claim for mileage to and from work, Meals, laundry and phone calls.

I am about to leave the agency and umbrella company and work for a regular distributional company as a Driver HGV1.

My question is can I and if so how, continue to claim these expenses??

Thanks

You can claim tax relief on any expenses you incur as a result of your employment, providing they were necessarily incurred. You would expect your employer to reimburse you in full for any out-of-pocket expenses such as phone calls and subsistence, and they can do so as tax free payments subject to some restrictions and limits. If they don't you should submit a claim but remember you only get tax relief, ie 20% if you're a basic rate taxpayer.

Speak to your employer first, and once you know what they'll pay, call HMRC to query whether any further relief would be due from them.

Speak to HMRC. If you begin this employment first, keep all receipts for evening meals and breakfasts as you may need to supply these later. If receipts aren't given, ie from those side-of-the-road cabins, keep a log of where you ate and how much it cost. Cost of laundry will likely be dealt with by means of a small adjustment to your tax-free amount, which to you in cash terms equates to about £10-20 a year, sometimes a little more. Travel to and from work is not an allowable expense in most cases, but clarify this with HMRC as in your case it may be. Keep mileage logs until you've spoken to them if necessary.
