Catching the OS bug and struggling with the supermarket shop......

In a good way!

Last night we had a voucher for £5 off a £30 Tescos shop. It was a last minute, forgot we had the voucher shopping trip so I hadn't made a list or meal planned as we're not at home much this week.

And do you know we were actually struggling to make up £30? We both ended up feeling guilty as we didn't have a list to follow, no meal plan and couldn't quite bring ourselves to choose any old thing. So we ended up stocking up a little on Christmas drink and cat food and then had to send hubby rushing through the store to pick up some socks as we realised the checkout still hadn't made £30. :D

I was actually feeling quite proud - especially after hubby commented disapprovingly about the lady in front who totalled £168, most of it convenience food.

So, has anybody else suddenly realised their habits have changed? Last year I thought we were good spending £40 a week, now I feel guilty going over £20 unless I'm stocking up....... (now, if only I could change the cleaning habit....... :p )

I walk around Tesco feeling bored and frustrated with what they have to offer. I used to only shop there but now I look at the meat and and cringe at the thought of where its come from, all in all I find the supermarkets depressing.

In summer I grow my own salad and I often sat down to an egg salad (eggs from my chickens) with homemade bread and thought it cant get any better than this!

I walked round a supermarket yesterday and discovered :-

    1) shopping is much quicker with a list!
    2) meals have more variety when you meal plan and also look for offers.

The second point was emphasized by a couple arguing loudly because "you only ever cook *!?*ing pasta and you never cook anything different" !!!

OS has saved me from that thanks!!! :D

  • I actually found it quite daunting and we ended up wandering round saying "well what do we need?" and spending more time than if I'd had a meal plan. The thing is, I used to shop that way all the time and still feel there was nothing in the house for dinner - OS really does change they way you view things I feel.

  • Same here - only it was £6 of a £40 at Sainsbury's. It took me way over an hour to come up with things to make the total - and then I bought some tea/coffee etc for work to fill out the cart LOL

I use the little hand scanner thingy at Sainsbury's as I can't add it all up on my way round. OH has a separate basket in which he puts things (storecupboard items) so that if we are short he can add it at the end - only problem is that if we have made the target, he leaves a full basket of items for the staff to put away :o

If you buy the whoopsies when they are BOGOF's or 2 for £x and the reduction is a good one, they sometimes pay you to take it away! (as long as you can get 2 of whatever it is)
