    I leave skin on roast potatoes.....yummy :D

But won't eat lettuce from a bag, too many chemicals for my liking.
There is no issue so small that it can't be blown out of proportion

for mash (.....out of interest doesnt that make for dirty looking mash) feel they can tell others what they should not buy? I would think its much healthier for someone to grab some preprepared things like veg for dinner than decide its too much hassle and visit the chippy :)
Nah - just tell people it's rustic mash and they won't know the difference ;):D:p

Re: cook books. My name is fm and I'm an addict  It's so bad, I'm having to sit on my hands over modernist cuisine - though seeing as it's currently waitlisted, I don't have much choice :rotfl:

I said that because it would seem that a lot of people consider cooking from scratch to be excessively difficult or time-consuming. Decent cookbooks will dispell these myths.
I thought not peeling spuds would make muddy mash, but it doesn't, remarkably.

Yes it does - full of grey and brown specks where the peel is. Not actual mud of course, even idle cows like me actually WASH the spuds before boiling!!!

But I just HATE peeling potatoes.:o

One thing I will never buy again is expensive toilet paper. Literally money down the drain, and can also block your drains too. Cheap paper for me :)

  • But we DO always have choice these day, with our modern supermarkets. I'm a busy mum of 2, one a baby, with a husband in the military often abroad in "sunnier climes". I'm also a full time medical student - oh and I have SLE (lupus), which can be fairly debilitating. But I still have the ability to open a pack of green beans and stick them in the steamer on top of the potatoes for 5 mins!

If I'm pushed for time, I'd rather cook from scratch the easy way - ie make an omelette or a boiled egg and soldiers rather than order in something much more expensive and unhealthy. I think the key to it is practice and prioritising really - I would love to make my own bread every day but the oven in our quarter is pants. However, I can make a pasta sauce from scratch in less time than it takes to cook the pasta - usually either a variation of a tomato-based or cheese-based sauce. And you can easily chuck some frozen peas or sweetcorn into it, and a tin of tuna for pasta bake, or sundried tomatoes and olives to posh it up a bit.

Each to their own, and let's support each other with that.

Exactly. It is what ever works for that person.

Drum me out the brownies as I buy things such as the odd ready meal and sugar cubes and squash in a squeezy bottle:eek:

Shocking I know, it harms nobody and is with in my budget.

And I am one of those people with a lame excuse as I have disabled husband. One of his hands does not work. And I do like him to be as independent as possible. Rather than rely on others. These products allow this.

There is no right or wrong way to be OS. I am more than happy in the way I run my household. And really it is none of anyone elses business what you buy and why you buy.

    Yours

    Calley

    Why not get a breadmaker?

I have a Kenwood and it makes lovely bread every time.It takes a few minutes to put the ingredients together.

They don't cost the earth either.(I got mine second-hand).
  • You should never, ever, buy pre-cut brocolli - it seriously takes 4 seconds to cut it all off the stem. I couldn't believe when I saw 2 big heads of brocolli for $1 at my store and $3 for the precut package with half as much! I used to work in a number of restaurants - the precut and bagged stuff is rarely cheaper. Frozen though sometimes is good because you can buy things that are not in season that you are craving without losing much quality/taste - I can't stand anything canned though other than tomato sauce!

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: great saying.......sums me up nicely

Why on earth not? a big bag was 50p in Asda today - I know because I got some for dinner tomorrow :D

I also should be ceremonially marched out of the guides :) due to the purchase of a pre made butter tart case for my lemon tart - same price as a pack of ready to roll shortcrust and a damm site quicker to prepare. Everything else for my sunday lunch will be cooked from scratch but only because I want to ..........each to their own seems to be the moral of the thread but it makes me smile that some people are so shocked at a relatively normal convenience food.
