You'd get a job for a start - can't help feeling you are getting a bit picky here - you've had no luck finding one of your 'dream jobs' (one with lots of holiday) so I don't think you are in a position to turn your nose up at this one!
*sigh*
You think a £25k salary is bad? (even pro-rata), well, that's your choice I guess, take that or stay on the dole.
the 40 hours probably includes lunch breaks, some firms advertise 9-5 as 35 hours, some advertise it as 40. It's possible it is 9-6 though, why don't you ask them? That still doesn't seem a good reason to refuse the job.
Are you sure the 20 days includes bank holidays? If it does, then yes, it should be 22.5 days, I'm sure you can talk to them about that. If it's 20 days plus bank holidays that's a pretty good package.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
NMW would be £12,400 or so so you're getting far more than that - around my area it would be considered quite good even at £20k for 40hrs.
£384 a week is better than £65 a week JSA.
And whilst its OK seeing jobs advertising more, you're not getting them which suggests you're not as qualified or experienced as those who are and are fully meeting the desirable criteria so your option is to take a lower grade/paid job.
If you are unemployed, you HAVE to accept a job offer.
As for the holidays, it is possibly 20 days plus bank holidays which makes 28 days and is legal.0 -
rule 1- TAKE THE JOB!
rule 2- see rule 1.
20 days is what they offer you, probably on top of the bank holidays... the odd couple of extra hours worked each week should not be an issue.. just take some extra ciggie breaks !Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

... What's the point in HR then!? ...
One of the great unansweared questions.
As to whether you should accept the job offer? It's difficult to say without knowing what it is you want to do with your life. All I know is this; it's much easier to get a job if you've already got one.0 -
I have been offered a job working 4 days a week for £20k (pro-rata on £25k for a 40 hour week), which would include 20 days holiday and BUPA private health insurance. It's a small company so they don't offer pension, or at least they aren't obliged to until they take on 5 staff or more.
Is this good? Should I accept? Most jobs in general seem to be 37 or so hours for the salary, 40 seems high to me.
From the Direct Gov website they say I would be entitled to 22.4 days' holiday, so it seems as though they are not offering the legal minimum entitlement.
I ask because I have seen some good jobs with Universities who offer generous amounts of holiday plus the bank holidays on top, whereas this offer seems to include the bank holidays. I have applied for these all over the country but have so far been unsuccessful despite meeting ALL of the essential and the majority of the desirable criteria. They don't give feedback on candidates who aren't invited to interview, so I can't work out where I am going wrong. I did ask if my application was being rejected by HR or the department itself and they said all applications get sent to the department who decides on who to shortlist. (What's the point in HR then!?)
Also, what would I get with BUPA? Immediate doctors appointments? Health screening? MRI scan of my entire body to check everything is ok? I just don't see how I would benefit from it.
I am looking for a new job and I would be happy with that.0 -
Accept it, if it's a job you would like/want to do.
In terms of the BUPA health insurance, they are offering it free as part of your benefits package, I don't see how this can be viewed as a bad thing.
Good luck, sounds like you need it.Per Mare Per Terram0 -
Just to clarify - I am not on the dole.
I know that I'm pretty much forced to take the job anyway, but it makes me wonder why I went to uni in the first place when I'd be on more if I left school at 16. It's hard to not "have a sense of entitlement" when it's drummed into you that you'll leave uni and get a job starting on 22k. I feel disappointed with what life/career has to offer. I'm sure I'm not the only graduate who thinks this way.
but if you worked a full week you would be on 25k?
stop moaning and be happy you got the job. there are plenty of people out there who would love the jobBest Wins - New York Trip, going Nov 2014: £350 House of Frazer Vouchers: £70 Handbag: Nitro Circus Live Tickets0 -
Sometime university careers offices give an unrealistic view of what students can expect in their first job. Very much depends what your degree is in too. If it's a degree very specific to the job -ie bio-chemistry BSc to work in a lab then it's a bit different to a more general degree that hasn't offered any grounding in a particular job so you'll need training. What is your degree in and is it a first or a 2:1 or something less desirable ? Is it from one of the top notch uni's or one of the also-rans? All these things make a difference-no matter WHAT your tutors tell you !

If you are working pro-rata hours your legal entitlement to holiday is also pro-rata.
As was said before you have a job offer-not exactly what you hoped for so perhaps a stepping stone but it is always easier to find a job from another job anyway-and maybe the reason you didn't get your dream job is because you don't have any working experience so taking this job whilst continuing to look may increase your chances anyway.
As for BUPA the best thing about it is the ability to schedule procedures to suit you. For example say you needed a minor op like having your tonsils removed- on the NHS you'd have a wait to see the specialist of at least several weeks -then the op would be scheduled some more weeks or months later -maybe cancelled due to bed availability -and you'd be on an open ward whilst in recovery. With BUPA you'd see the specialist the same week or the week after and be able to schedule the op to suit you-for example my son needed a minior op 8 weeks to see the specialist-another at least 8 to get the op. I used BUPA and we saw the specialist the same week and the op was the following week-and he was in a really nice private room. Health insurance is one of those things you don't really appreciate until you actually need it at at your age if you are in good health maybe just be thankful it doesn't seem useful

UH!! WHy do people delete their first post if they get responses they dont like?! Does my head in! you might as well not post in the first place.
Sorry but it sounds like your making up excuse after excuse NOT to work. So the job is 4 days a week, and your complaining about not having enough holidays? Whatever do the people who work 5 days a week do?!
Your a graduate expecting £22k a year because "thats what you was told at Uni" - You should know that isnt the case in real life? Economic down turn saw to that.
The job YOU have been offered works out at £9.61 ph. You should count yourself lucky you want to try being 19 and having to work for £4.92.0
