son not enough wage?

my 18yr old has had time off sick for an injury and doesnt think he will get much wage to last him over christmas - last time he was off for the death of his nan he wasnt paid (should he have been?) - when he questioned his boss as to whether he will be getting sick pay, etc - he was told if he didnt have enough he could go to the social and explain he had a sick note and they would top it up.........i dont understand this so ive told him to ask today for his boss to clarify but we really wont know till he gets paid next week........

anyone know what hes on about please? what would his monthly wage need to be for his age to quarify for help from social?

    i think he should be paid about £70 a week ssp from his employer, i cant understand why the employer is telling him to go to the social security.

    There is no automatic right to sick pay from an employer unless it states that in the contract.

    Most city employers (and a High Street bank) I have worked for have 20 days stated in the contract, but that is cumulative so if I had a few days off here and there then I fell and broke a hip or some other disaster I would only have been paid the remainder of the 20 days I had not already received.

    There is also no obligation to pay for compassionate leave.

    Assuming the contract does not state that he is entitled to sick pay over and above that which he has received, in which case he would need to take advice to get the employer to honour the contractual terms, then the employer is correct in referring him to the State, as they will pick up sick pay as long as certain criteria are met.
