Getting Work Experience

Options
Hi, I’m 20, ive completed the OUs B680 certificate in accounting and have little to no accountancy work experience. I realise getting an actual paying job at this point would be extremely lucky but I should be able to find unpaid work experience yes? In regards to getting work experience I would appreciate answers to the following questions.

1 – I’m going to be shadowing a self-employed book keeper for a few days soon, What sort of questions should I ask? What should I pay attention to? How do I make the most out of it?

2 – I have sent speculative emails to various accountancy companies in my area asking for work experience, being very flexible, paid, unpaid, temporary, permanent etc. What else should I be doing to secure some experience? What other businesses should I target? What other methods should I use?

3 – Any other advice that might be useful?

Thanks

As well as targeting accountancy firms, try really big companies in your area. If they're large enough, chances are they'll have an in-house accountancy function. Probably best to ring up and find out before making an application though, just in case their accountancy needs are dealt with by another branch, or they have in fact fully outsourced them.

If you just look at accountancy firms, you may miss some opportunities.

    Best of luck!:)

Had you thought of approaching local - or local branches of - charities? They often need administrative assistance, and will pay fares and lunch expenses. Those with websites may advertise there.

I have seen many volunteers working in accounts departments during my life in what Americans call the not-for-profit sector.
