I've been catching up on all of Dom's programmes since I've been away and one in particular caught my eye. This was a case of a lady running her own internet business and was cold called by a company who purported to offer her an advertising contract for £5 (!!) pending a contract which she could cancel before a certain time so she said she gave the caller her card details. After a short period, she cancelled the contract only to find that they had taken hundreds of pounds from her bank account by direct debit and had now gone out of business. She contacted DOM who couldn't help, but he told viewers about the DD guarantee. What I couldn't figure out was that, if this lady was bank savvy, as she should have been if she was running a business, she would know that companies can't take money form a DD unless it has been set up in accordance with the DD rules and agreed by both parties, and if she had checked her account she would have seen the DD set up on her account. It takes all sorts!

Don't fall into the trap of assuming that anyone who runs a small business is completely knowledgeable about the ins and outs of banking and how direct debits work.

She didn't set up a direct debit she gave her card details as a recurring payment so she had no protection. That's why she was unable to get any money back because it wasn't a direct debit.

She wouldn't have seen a DD set up because one wasn't set up.

The reason Dom mentioned the direct debit guarantee was to show the difference between recusrring payments and direct debits.

No, she actually said that the money had been taken from her account by direct debit. She obviously doesn't know the difference between a DD and a recurring payment.

Unfortunately she's in the majority. Just read the forums here, it crops up quite regularly.
