camcorder advice should I buy here or not

Im off on hols soon, going to singapore, new zealand, fiji hawaiii.....Cant wait!!!
My digital camcorder has just packed in so I need a new one.
Firstly I have no idea what I want/need, just simple family videos, the easier it is to transfer to video/dvd the better... (so any recommendations are appreciated)
However would I be better waiting and buying in singapore? where i visit first.
