Helping mum with loan settlement

Hi lovely people :)

I am after some advice for my mum.

Short version is my mum is disabled. She will never be able to work and is on high rate DLA and IB. She has a loan taken out 3 years ago (before the attack which caused her to be disabled) but now the £150p/m payment is taking nearly 35% of her income.

My mum is gradually getting worse and the stress of this loan is causing her to breakdown. My mum has also 2 other credit cards but I have managed to make payment arrangements of £25 each p/m for the next 2 years then they will be settled.

As for the loan, they refuse to negotiate or reduce her payments. The loan is with Vanquis and I am pulling my hair out with them. I have stopped the nasty and threatening calls (I have them documented and trust me when I say they are nasty they are really nasty) to mum as she is currently about 2 months behind due to not having the funds to always pay the full amount.

I have sent copies of the letter her doctor provided (and the credit card companies accepted with their deal) to state mum will never work and will eventually get worse as they originally stated once they get this they would "write off the debt" due to exceptional medical circumstances but they are now refusing to do this.

Can anyone help/offer advice on what steps my mum can do to help reduce this? I just want to either cancel this debt (about £2,600) or reduce it so she has a bit more money to herself a month.

Cheers Cookiee:beer:

  • we`d all like a little more money or a bit less month, and many people lay out more than 35% of income on debt repayments, does your mum get all the benefits she`s entitled to?if she lives alone she should be getting income support and possibly severe disability premium, and of course help with rent/mortgage and council tax,so she should be getting around £150 a week PLUS dla and rent etc help
however if she already gets all she should then i would suggest contacting either cccs or cab for help dealing with this debt

Hi woodbine thanks for the advice.

Yes she gets all her benefits etc. She has to pay alot out each month for treatments etc etc and she is left with roughly £100 a month to cover this so was hoping to try and get some advice to reduce this debt to help her. I will speak to CAB.

    Cheers
