Welcome car finance help please

Hi there,
Just requiring some help with welcome car finance and them playing hard ball....
Right im 2 years through my contract and wish to hand the car back...end of, Anyway 12 months ago i had arrears on the account and phoned them up sorted it out and agreed to pay back the arrears (was one month i was behind with)
Anyway i call them and they say i cant Voluntary hand the car back as i served a DEFAULT NOTICE IN MARCH 2010. Now under no uncertain terms was this never recieved, no way i never had this.
So im told by the complaints team and my account manager at welcome that i cant VT the car back and i would owe the full HP on the agreement..
Ive done a bit of research and called again, i ask them did they send this Recorded Delivery, they tell me that they didnt but they dont need to..
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP A GUY WHO IS COMPLETELY AT HIS WITS END:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::(:(:(:(

My friend at work here used to work for Welcome and she says that what they have said is true and is in the terms.
She did suggest that because of the mess Welcome have been in that at one point they were taking a lower settlement figure. Poss 25% or more off the sum.Staring point of debt £23,343:mad:
