lump free mash please!

hello all. Having my nan for christmas dinner, she's coming to my house I mean!! What I yearn for is Lump free mash. Whenever my dad mashes they're lump free, yet when I mash- using the same kind of masher and spuds, I end up with little lumps. Would get myself a ricer as they look the job but there must be a way, a way to lump free mash. Please help o wise ones!
