My new cooker arrived tuesday, fantastic in every way. except when i use the oven it has a real stink to it. just like a new smell, but it gives me a headache. i'm sure over time it will wear off and i am keeping windows open. but does anyone have any tips on how to get rid of the smell quicker ?

Hi
What make is it?
Does the manual advise you to wipe down the insides/turn the oven on for a while?
If it continues contact the supplier. The smell shouldn't be giving you a headache.Sealed Pot Challenge No 089-Finally got a signature.:rotfl::j0 -
We had the same when we got a new oven last year ( cheapy from argos) It go so bad I got my other half to take it out and check we hadn't left some plastic on it ( we hadn't ) phoned argos who said it was normal. It was fine after about a week0

i got this one

can't see anything in instructions about cleaning before use, only the hob part.
my dd says the smell is less than tuesday, so maybe it is fading already and getting less but perhaps i'm too sensitive with smells ( pregnant hormones)
i'll give it a bit longer and hopefully that will work.0 -
I had a new oven recently and the instructions said to put it on high for about 45 minutes before first using it to cook. It smelt then but not since. Same with the rings, but only about 10 minutes for them as far as I can remember.0

Had an electric oven installed a couple of months ago. The engineer said I had to put the grill on full blast for half an hour, then put the oven itself on full blast for about the same length of time. It apparently burns off the coatings that are on the elements. Then you let it cool down completely, wipe it out with warm soapy water and the smell should be gone.
I do know from an ex who used to work for them that Currys staff are told not to mention it if someone comes in wanting a new oven because their last new one smells funny when they switch it on.
It is a strange smell though, and it seems like it will never go at the time. But it does.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

ah , i will try that . thankyou.
i've not had electric before so big learning curve for me. and i've only cooked stuff on a gas 6 ( or whatever that is in electric) so it can go hotter. haven't tried the grill yet as i'm finding electric cooking a bit daunting tbh. but i made some fiary cakes today with great success so my confidance is growing.
hopefully a hot blast and a soapy wash down when cool with solve the problem.0 -
I know the feeling. Gas 6 solves most problems - on mine, most things cook on about 180 for 20 minutes.
And don't use the fan if you want it more like the gas version - the fan seems to make the surfaces a little more dry and crispy, IYSWIM. (not ideal for pasta bake, but fine for jacket potatoes, I suppose.)
I can bake with it, I can roast stuff with it, but give me oven chips and the odds are that I will burn them.
Oh, and always have your extractor fan going at full pelt whenever you open the oven door - they seem to set alarms off in a way my gas ovens never did.
At least I got a gas hob, though - so I use that most of the time.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

my gas cooker was fan assisted which i like so that was an important factor when buying a electric one.
it can't be turned off on the electric, it could on the gas.
i'm dreading i will burn something, where i'm getting used to it. so i set the timer and watch everything like a hawk,lol.0 -
mines a double oven and I usually only use the one so even after 3 years the second one stinks.. and I recently discovered the 'pan store' is in fact a slow cook oven... well I never did!! lol
Mine just stinks cos it needs cleaning
It does wear off after a few uses.. Can you turn the oven on and leave it for a while with the doors open so the smell goes straight outside?LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
