Has anyone ever...

Sold their real life story to a magazine?

I'm currently in contact with an agency about selling my weight loss story, because I could do with the money towards university and it has dramatically changed my life.

I was just wondering if anyone else has been down this route and how it turned out?

xx

I would personally avoid selling a story for money - the kinds of publications that may be willing to pay for a story are also most likely to misquote and twist what you have said. Don't people gain and lose weight all the time after all, what's your USP? I guess there might be some interest from slimming magazines and sensationalist rags.

A freelance writer contacted me after I was on tele, she said she would write my story, sell it to a magazine, and I would be paid for it. I agreed so we went through a lengthy interview on the phone, she asked me a lot of questions. Then she rang again with more questions.

When she had written it she read it out to me on the phone so I could make any corrections. Then she asked me to send (email) her some photo's of myself. I did this from the ones I already had. These weren't good enough, she specified exactly the poses she wanted and asked if I could take some more. This I did and sent them. These weren't right either, I was getting fed up by this time, it was taking ages, she had already had her moneys worth out of me.

The article was published in a tacky gossip magazine. They superimposed my face onto another photo to get the shot they were looking for. I got paid, but I hoped no one I knew had seen it, it was awful. I wouldn't do it again.
