Looks like I'm the only person that isn't that keen on Chesnuts then.

slit them with an x (just like a sprout) and they seem to peel a lot easier and less explosions. my brother (a chef) boils them for a bit first and then roasts them but i prefer mine just roasted. Chestnuts and jellied eels are the foods that no one else will eat apart from me so i get to scoff the whole lot myself!

One of the things I love about chestnuts is that they are one of the few things that you can't get year round these days and so i really look forward to them. The day i can buy fresh chestnuts in july i will know that the world has gone truly mad. My ex-mil says that she used to feel the same about strawberries in December
