Sugar Free

Hiya everyone

I need to reduce my daily sugar/salt intake, i'd like to cut this out as much as possible. The problem is whilst i'm at work, as normally for a snack i'd have crisps/chocolate during the day. What could i replace instead of these except for fruit?

I drink plenty of water and have cut out all fizzy drinks, i also don't drink coffee/tea.

Any help would be greatly appreciated x

try and eliminate sweet snacks & go for savoury, such as pretzels, breadsticks, snack a jacks, crackers etc. Or popcorn without the syrupy sauce ?
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

  • Hi babes

I hope you don't mind me adding my tupp'nyworth. I was diagnosed as being diabetic 15 months ago. The best piece of advice I was given by my practice nurse was:- eat low sugar, low fat, low salt foods. This is the recommended diet for everybody, whether diabetic, heart-attack risk, high blood pressure, etc. Everyone's health can be improved by eating a diet that follows these guidelines.

Sorry to contradict Lynzpower (a fellow OSer :hello: - Sorry Lynz) but pretzels and breadsticks can be high in salt - pretzels particularly. If you are hungry between meals, the best thing you can eat really is fruit. If you can't stand to eat fruit between meals then maybe you could adjust what you have for breakfast. If you have a slow-release carbohydrate like porridge with maybe fruit, seeds and/or nuts added, you won't feel hungry til lunchtime.

I know it is a pain to make but fruit salad with yoghurt at lunchtime is an absolute treat after my porridge with sunflower and pumpkin seeds! :D

    Hi Annie

    Thanks for that, greatly appreciated.

I think i'm going to start having one or two crackers with butter then maybe have a little fruit with that or a homemade smoothie?

What i really need to cut down on mainly is my sugar intake, not so much the salt.

My dad is allergic to sugar & his diet is totally sugar free, including fruit. He snacks on lots of things like :

    Rice cakes
    ryvitas
    Herb scones
    Cheese shortbread
    celery
    radishes
    cucumber
    low fat cream cheese
    sunflower seeds
    toast
    prawns
    crabsticks
    roasted & cooled vegetables

dips/spreads include : savoury chutney, hommus, taramasalata, tanzaiki (not spelt right but the greek one of yogurt & cucumber), HM peanut butter (no added salt or sugar), marmite.

    HTH;)

  • If you like veggies, you could have some carrots, celery, peppers, whatever you like really with perhaps some low fat dip?? The veg is good for you and the dips can be really tasty so you don't feel as though you are being "good" if you see what I mean. Smoothies are great (if you can be bothered making them - I can't!).

So long as you are getting your five-a-day and the salt and sugar are reduced as far as poss you should be absolutely fine.

    Good luck, Annie x

I have a friend who likes to acoid giving her kids too much sugar/salt or wheat and she is happy to give her children the organix goodies range as special treat type snacks. They also have some jelly babies from M&S which are sugar and colour additive free. Also gives them Kallo organic rice cakes which they adore, you can get some flat square ones with dark choc on them which can be used as a treat.

You can find salt-free oatcakes in some health food stores and supermarkets, they are really filling and delicious with hummus. You can also buy salt-free butter.

Beware of hidden sugar in many packaged foods!
