The secret millionaire

I thought it said in the programme thats where he came from originally? Could be mistaken. But the area he lived in was made up of multi millionaires so not much change to help them there ;-) It seemed to me he didnt want to just 'hand out money' to just anyone in the street, but wanted to find people that genuinely needed help that would last longer than £50 given out on the street... :-):staradmin:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin:staradmin0

Is there more in the series? It sounds interesting.0

I watched the one last week and the guy on that one had a far less judgemental attitude and gave away 40 grand and continued to be involved with the people in the area. He was a far more appealing and likeable person.
in the older chap's defence though he did offer the Kenyan guy a job, which I think was a good thing,as it gave him a foot on the ladder as an accountant, which is what he wanted but I didn't think 7 grand was much for the asylum seekers, especially as he could see how desperate things were - they obviously needed ongoing support
I'm a bit torn slagging him off though because at least he was doing something, but it did make you wonder about his motives, as his heart didn't seem in it somehow0 -
I watched this episode too and will be lwatching the rest. I thought he could have given a lot more as it must have been pocket money to him!Do what you love :happyhear0

Ok I know I'll be in the minority...I love the programme & thankfully am still able to see the positives...yes this weeks did have some questionable opinions but was willing to live in pooper conditions, admit that he was wrong and give his money away. Yes he may have millions and may be doing it for the wrong reasonsbut who cares! A bloke who was desperate for a job got one, a couple who couldnt afford to get on the housing ladder did so and now paying a mortgage instead of rent (but do accept that this may not have been the wisest decision!) and an organisation got £7000 they wouldnt otherewise have had. I find it really sad that posts above are so negative & judgemental & see such poor motives in what he did! Bottom line is that the money made a huge difference to those that didnt have it. What worried me more were the amount of people he encountered in the prog who happily stay on benefits rather than get a job!!
For those that want to watch its on C4 at 9pm...weds I think! I agree with the others that the first prog was much better - younger guy who really connected with the people he came into contact with & continued to work with charities after he left..mind you same could be said this week! Anyway...hope people watch & that the debates continue!Nerd no 109 Long haulers supporters DFW #1! Even in the darkest moments, love and hope are always possible.0 -
Just like all these reality TV shows they have to have a false deadline & thus inject some suspense into the proceedings. Therefore he only had 10 days to find his "deserving" cause. He also only had to live in poverty for 10 days, which lets face it is a doddle!
He seemed a nice enough guy, but there wasnt much he could do within the format of the show. These things are so shallow, a piece of light entertainment with misery as an ingredient & a contrived happy ending.
Cannot condemn it completely as it did show him being willing to rethink his beliefs when real people failed to live up to their stereotypes.Proud to be dealing with my debts :j

I thought the taxi driver bloke and family had had their light-bulb moment hence he was working all-the-hours to get rid of their credit card debt.
The millionaire's point was that the area needed people like that to stick around as an inspiration to others.
I didn't see the point of making him live on a few quid every day - its relitively easy to rough it for a bit when you know you're wealthy anyway.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 208 - Proud To Have Dealt With My Debts DEBT FREE DECEMBER 2008!!!0 -
If he is such a nice, caring guy couldn't he have done this experiment without a camera crew around?
What a load of self congratulating waffle.
He got good advertising for his company, a couple in debt now have more debt and we have a few more asylum seekers who pass through 15 other "safe" countrys to get here.
Last weeks episode was much better, he seemed genuinely concerned to help and didnt do it to get a slap on the back from his chums at the Country Club.0 -
I agree with what has been said about the young lad last week.
He even lost everything years ago and built it back up again so good luck to him!
To see him back at the 'Pedro Club' to see how things are going, and also to go on the Board Of Trustees (I think it was) shows that he had a real interest in what was being achieved.
The cheque recipients seemed a bit more deserving too, but the Nicaraguan family did cook John a nice sunday dinner this week and we all know how expensive 'eating out' can be these days, so £10,000 may have been a relative bargain for John.
On a more serious side, it was good to hear that the husband would go out for a minimum of 12hr shifts in his cab and stay out longer if he hadn't reached his target for the evening (as opposed to just jacking it in early if he had a good night).
