Whirlpool Dishwasher won't start - HELP!

Options
What a time for the dishwasher to pack up, with just 2 weeks to Christmas!

I have a Whirlpool ADP 7966 dishwasher. Right now, the on/off button is flashing and the programme light is at '6 Sense Normal 40-55'. If I turn the programme knob, it has no effect, the light stays in the same place.

I have tried turning it off and on at the wall with no success. If I press the start button and keep it pressed for a few seconds, it will start up for about 20 seconds and then stop.

Has anyone else come across this with a whirlpool dishwasher? does anyone have a manual with a troubleshooting guide? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

TIA - Benji

I know very little about dishwashers but my first inclination would be to look for blockages. It may be that the extraction system is blocked in some way and a water level sensor won't allow the programme to continue until the water has been drained.

If you can drain it manually then try it again, see what happens. Also see if you can unblock it. Are there any reservicable filters etc on it??

I've cleaned the drain filter inside the machine, and pulled it out but there is nothing round the back of the machine.

I thought I could see a filter/drain at the front bottom right hand corner - but after I took off the panel over it I can't work out what it is because there is nothing to unscrew, just a black hole with a small amount of thread visible.

Now I've pulled the machine out, there does seem to be water escaping from it - I decided to look underneath the machine but it is covered with a metal panel. Maybe in the morning I'll try and find my special screwdrivers (the screws have a 5 point star on them).

The screws you refer to are torx screws. You can get torx screwdrivers for them from hardware shops.

Are you sure your outlet hose is not blocked?

We have a Whirlpool, you might not be getting any water into the machine, this is why ours did the same as yours. Turned out there was a hole in the inlet pipe.

Got a set of torx thanks - just couldn't remember the correct way of spelling and didn't want to appear thicker than I really am!

Is there a way to check the outlet hose? Obviously, I can disconnect it from the drain (under the sink) but it doesn't seem to detatch from the machine - so I can't run stuff through it to check.

Does that mean you had watter flowing out of the plastic hose between the pipework and the machine, or was it leaking on the inside? Thx

  • we get that with our dishwasher thats a hot point and each time its been something traping the impellor in the pump.

It is a easy job , take the back off , find and remove pump , normally two screws . then give the pump a clean. once clean replace back etc and try the washer again...:-)

Okay, layed it on it's side to get access to all the gubbing, which are behind a panel on the BOTTOM of the dishwasher. Couldn't make any sense of what I saw so left it for a bit (been chaotic here recently). Whent back to it today, still didn't know what to do so I decided to put the cover back on, push the darn thing back under the worktop and worry about it another day.

Hey Ho - it works fine now!

Think I'll get one of those Finish dishwasher cleaners next time I'm at Tesco because from your replies, it sounds like there is some sort of blockage which has hopefully been dislodged but a thorough clean of the system sounds like a good preventative idea.
