  • Congratulations cossie,
Ebay is always a great place to spot bargains, look out for the 'pick up' only items as they are cheaper usually. Also, become chummy with all you friends with babies, it's amazing how generous people are when passing on clothes etc. Charity shops can be sometimes be good especially for clothes. Car boot sales are EXCELLENT as you end up with nearly new items for a bargain. 'Freecycle' is a great free local giveaway site for everything under the sun and often there are baby items for free to collect. Often there are bargains in the local papers too.
A golden rule is don't spend too much on anything especially on your first pram/travel system. Every Mum I know (including me) ends up buying a Marclaren type buggy after a few months, on top of their exisiting pram/travel system, as they are so much easy to put in the car, bus and smaller to store. Finally, never scrimp on a car seat, they are worth their weight in gold.
Enjoy your pregnancy - what an great adventure you are on!

  • Check the guarantee on items - we bought a Chicco highchair from Kiddicare and the seat split after 8 months of use but they refused to replace it free because the guarantee only lasts for 6 months. I contacted Chicco and they said...

    Good afternoon,

Thank you for your e-mail. I am very sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties with your Chicco Highchair. Unfortunately Chicco is unable to help you directly as your contract of sale lies with the retailer, whether any charges are made to you would be their decision. The six months guarantee provided by Chicco is standard across the nursery industry but you still have your statutory rights outside of this period.

    Regards
    Chicco UK

After a few more emails they wouldn't budge so I admitted defeat but won't use either company again when our next baby arrives in May.

However, I believe Mothercare give a year or more on their own brand stuff???

    Congratulations! :j

Everything above, but don't forget the January sales! If you are one of those that don't want to buy anything before the magic 13 weeks, then I bet you still have plenty of time left when the summer sales come on (end June/beginning of July).

It's ALWAYS worth shopping around and checking the price in every shop you can even find bargains in Mothercare who are relatively expensive. I liked the bigger Boots for stuff and Babies R Us run some great promotions too.

With both of my little ones I managed to get almost everything in the sales. The travel systems especially - my boy's for £70 in Mothercare and my girl's for £110 in Babies R Us (few years apart! :)).

It's ALWAYS worth shopping around and checking the price in every shop. Ikea are great for cots, my littlest is just growing out of hers now, it was about £40 with the mattress!

There's no need at all to spend a fortune; first time mums especially tend to go mad and buy things they don't realise they'll probably never use! Even if you buy brand new I think you can easily get everything you need for under £500.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Since you've got lots of time yet (congratulation BTW) if it were me I'd wait for the car-boot sales to start up again. It's almost unbelievable how many beautiful, almost new, prams, buggies etc sell for a fraction of the brand new prices.

My daughter is a childminder and we kitted her entire nursery rooms out with toys, stair-gates, cot, double push-chair etc etc with massive savings on what we'd have paid elsewhere. For the most part they were spotless, but the odd thing which wasn't, only needed a clean to be sparkling.
    Excellent value!!!
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Most baby items have 6 months warranty ive noticed, the good thing about Kiddicare is that the guarantee starts from your due date, we bought a Mamas and Papas travel system from there in June which was £250 cheaper then elsewhere but the guarantee wont start until January
  • Join www.freecycle.org
It is a free recycling website on which you may find items you are looking for. Having an 11 year gap between mine, I had to re-stock and was lucky enough not to have to spend too much. Also do not be afraid of charity shops - full of brand new baby stuff, as they (babies) grow much quicker than you anticipate, and all those lovely gifts never get worn! Many congratulations by the way!
  • Where I live (Plymouth, Devon, UK ) a new baby shop has opened, it sells lots of beautiful baby things and the prices are very good there. They are selling online from January 2007 and that is also when their sale begins!

    Congratulations!

My friend is due VERY soon .... so as mentioned previously .... some of your friends with kids may offer goods to you ..... we did for our friend.

She only needed to get a buggy and car seat! Although, our cot bed was too large for her room so I ended up tracking down a bargain for her at kiddicare.

Anyway, as she no longer needs our baby cotbed and furniture, you are more than welcome to it, will save you a few bob ... and free up some space our end :D
I can say whatever I like here ... 'cos no one can see me .. ner ner ner ner ner !!!....

How do you know I ain't sitting here butt naked?!?!

I thunk I've made you think for a minute!
