in Cutting tax
My wife is making a claim for mileage for the last tax year.
Part of the claim relates to a company car, the rest to a private vehicle.
Section 2 provides a clear place for "own vehicle".
Am I right in saying the claim for company vehicle related should be submitted in Section 4 for other expenses?

The P87 is OK for claiming for the private car but you can claim by letter. The claim in respect of the company car is probably best done by letter. You will need to explain what was paid out and what was reimbursed by the employer.
I would suggest you do it all by letter.0 -
Not sure if I am trying to teach my grandmother to suck eggs here but, strictly speaking, when considering the company car aspect of your wife's claim, you cannot use the Advisory Fuel Rates in the claim.

The correct method is to declare the total amount spent on fuel.
Apportion that between business mileage and private mileage.
Deduct the amount the employer has reimbursed from the business mileage cost.
Claim the balance.
Having said that, in my days at HMRC if I was happy that a claim based on the Advisory Fuel Rates was reasonable, I would allow it.
Whether current HMRC staff have, and use, the discretion I had I really don't know.
If you have all the figures to make a technically correct claim I would suggest you do so, with an explanation about the employer disallowing the first 40 miles.0
