What kind of router one with modem? Do you have cable or dial-up access? You will need network cards or USB dongle forPCs does laptop have inbuilt wifi?

See Linksys £39.99 deal at PC World LINKSYS WUSB54GS & WRT54GSUK SPEEDBOOSTER 125g ROUTER AND USB ADAPTER http://www.pcworld.co.uk. Good deal as is cheap and has speedbooster technology and easy security setup. This is with one USB adapter so one PC could go hardwired to router with LAN card installed , one use USB adaptor and if laptop has wifi inbult then you would be fine otherwise you will have to buy a wired/wireless card or USB adaptor for PC or USB/wifi card for laptop. They also have a version with inbuilt ADSL modem. Sorry cannot be of more help.

since you have an adsl connection, i would recommend the netgear dg834g.
i have found it to be very reliable and easy to setup and also very secure.
it also has an inbuilt firewall giving you an extra layer of security from the internet
  • may I just add please PLEASE don't buy a router from belkin. I did and they don't work LOL I called Belkin and they were completely aware of the problem, let me keep the old router and receive a new one all at cost to them. The new one doesn't work either and I'm disgusted that PCWorld are still selling the old Belkin even though they know it is faulty.

Just to let you know incase you see an irresistible offer :)

  • I have just bought the Lnksys one at the weekend and I can honestly say they are quite easy to setup and come with a USB adapter too all for £40 quite reasonably priced.

Just so you know bud, no, you wouldn't need to keep your primary pc on all the time.

Once your using an adsl router, its the Router that handles your adsl connection to the internet, both PCs would simply connect TO the router for the connection meaning only the router needs to be switched on for you to have a connection to the internet.
