Have started looking around for our venue for wedding breakfast and reception and it's just a nightmare. I know some people have gotten great deals by finding somewhere other than the traditional hotel but I have no idea what I am looking for! I am going out with my mum and sister to visit a few places but until then am stuck searching onlien and don't even know what search terms to use!
ARGH
Anyone got any advice?
Thanks for reading, sorry if it seems a bit self-obsessed am just getting stressed already.

My advice is if you know which areas you want to have the reception, if its not too far from you take a drive round and see if you can see any places that take your eye.
Also when searching online for places, try searching for halls and for party venues as well as wedding venues as some places may not be listed as a wedding venue but instead a party venue but would equally do the same job.
Post on here where abouts you are looking for a venue as there may be people on here that could recommend places. If you like my post, please click the THANKSMarrying my gorgeous partner & best friend, 4th May 2013

Hiya,
If you are looking for a venue that can accommodate the whole day (i.e. civil ceremony, wedding breakfast and reception) a good place to start is your local council website (and neighbouring ones too).
They will all have a list of 'approved venues' for civil marriage ceremonies, many of which will be hotels, sports clubs, golf clubs, restaurants, stately homes, you know the thing. That might give you some inspiration.
Some local councils will also have 'halls for hire' on their website - worth having a look as some are so cheap you can use leftover budget for decor. They tend to vary in size a lot.
Local wedding fairs might also help with finding local venues.
If you're having your ceremony at a church/registry office, and are just looking for meal+reception venue, you've got more scope. Google is your friend.
Can you narrow down your priorities to help your search? I must say, we found that we changed our minds after visiting a few places, so it might be worth just picking a handful of local places to go and look at, to help find out what style of venue you like, then you can widen the search.
Oh, and hitched.com has a good list of questions to ask venues - you might find that making some phone calls in advance will rule out certain venues if they're not suitable for your requirements.

Looking for just meal and reception. Wedding breakfast numbers are about 40 and evening reception numbers about 180 for november next year and I'm in Shropshire.
Not really sure what I'm looking for in a venue to be honest. Will be going for a drive round at the weekend but neither myself nor my partner drive so have to wait on other people helping out.
Thanks for all the advice guys0 -

I'm in Shropshire! Here are some MSE-places:
http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/heart-of-england/hostels/Wilderhope-manor/index.aspx My friend went to a wedding here and said it was fab apart from no mirrors in the toilet! You could easily sort that out though!
http://www.hallshire.com/halls/view/668/coalport-village-hall looks nice although I haven't been.
http://www.stokesbarn.co.uk/index.php is great if you want to have a marquee and they have loads of accommodation for guests, I was going to have my wedding there but they want the music turned right down at 12 which was the only downside.
