argos wooden slatted beds

Options
Has anyone else had any problems with argos wooden slatted beds.

I purchased one for my daughter in Jan 2005 and one of the slats broke within 8 months. It was replaced completely in oct 2005. Another slat has now broken on the replacement bed which is only 14 months old. Is this all I should expect a slatted bed to last as it cost me £190.00.

I purchased another slatted bed for my son before I bought my daughter's (not from argos) and he has had no problems at all with his. Is this just luck of the draw or argos's beds?

I have e-mailed argos and they want me to get an independent engineer to do a report to prove their bed is faulty before they do anything. Is it worth going to this expense and trouble.

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

  • is your daughter secretly using it as a trampoline? only kiddin.
we bought a slatted bed from ikea for less than 200 quid and nearly 3 years on it is still solid(touch wood). argos however... well.... i would suspect it is outside if its guarentee period and as you've had it over 1 yr then it would be unlikely they would now have to resolve the problem. can you make a new slat from some timber?? just a thought.
if you do go for a new bed, if not already the case i would suggest a slatted bed where the slats dont go the entire width of the bed, but instead two slats that meet in the middle section. more sturdy that way.
but like i say, we've had our slatted bed from ikea for 3 years with no probs so far, so i would say you should reasonably expect your slatted bed to last a bit longer than 14 months at the second attempt.

good luck, let us know what you decide to do.

That's the key point, noway you can compare argos with ikea quality. I've an argos one currently, but not satisfied from day 1.

Argos beds are rubbish - we've just replaced the slats ourselves as our children seem to break at least one a week.

I've got one of their beds, the slats are fine, the support that runs front to back on either side wasn't - it was held on to the frame by about 5 large staples, which started to give way one night (our toy poodle jumped on the bed, which led to a loud crack;)).
I ended up fixing the support with half a dozen 35-40mm screws at about 3am in the morning (one of those times i'm very glad we organised the garage and fitted lights out there).

My 6 year old managed to break the whole side frame on his which i thought was quite an achievement cosidering he hadn't broken any of the slats.

I ended up having to reinforce it with a couple of planks some glue and 3 inch screws. Its true they are not exactly the best quality, when i do have to replace them i will go elsewhere next time.
  • top tip - screw a 2 x 2 to the centre of the underside of slats for the whole length of bed. you can either support the wood at each end or screw it to the end slats and a few along its length. this distributes point loads across neighbouring slats. atlernatively lay a piece of board on the slats to help the distribution. most double beds have the central 2 x 2 or 2 x 1 already.

Nice to know I'm not alone in thinking argos's beds are cr*p.

    Thanks for all the comments.

Mine unfortunately is all in one piece, as it has not seen much action. :(

Hey I couldn't believe it when i just saw your post about these wooden beds, well i am nearly in the same position as you. I bought a bed from argos in their sale in July 2005, the bed i bought was their caversham top rail end wooden bed, and i can tell you that we are on our 3rd bed and all our friends and family are having a right laugh at us saying new flat , new bed etc etc;) but honestly the first bed lasted about 2 weeks and the second only lasted one night:p so they replaced these beds and the third one is slightly different to the first two and touch wood (lol) seems to be ok and we have had it now about 4 months , i just checked argos website and they seem to be still selling these beds so not sure if their is a general problem with these beds or just by sheer chance that we have had problems? Can you remember if your bed was a caversham?

My bed was the Loveheart one, I have tried posting a link don't know how to shrink it, plus I bought the comfort mattress to go with it.

I would never buy another bed from argos again after my experience and reading other people's comments.

    Thanks for your reply.
