The Futility of Attending Jobs Fairs

so if it wasnt a jobs fair what was it,
Good Question! I'd probably call it an information services event. It seemed to promote more benefits and financial advice more than anything.
KiKi, I don't think my expectations of a Jobs Fair are too high. I expect there to be jobs that can be applied for at an event. Like I said earlier there have been 2 Jobs Fairs in the past that I have been to, and they have had a wealthy resource of Jobs to apply for! This one was jam packed, we had to queue to enter the event, and when we got in it was a vastly different event to what it was advertised as. The other local councils have done a smashing job when they hosted theirs just over a year ago. It's just a shame this one wasn't up to scratch.
I voiced my concerns today at the Job Centre anyway. I get the impression it's fallen on deaf ears, but no matter. I have other job applications and leads to worry about.0 -
Avoid Jobcentre Plus jobfairs (unless you have been summoned along). Also avoid the Jobcentre Plus job bus!
There is no law saying you have to attend - you must do 3 steps per week.
Public transport (UK) on average is around £4 return... JCP jobfairs are (minus the colleges, armed forces etc.) exhibitions of employers to get people to consider working for them. If you are an active jobseeker there is no way you are going to have overlooked them. The people doing exhibitions are rarely the persons with the employment decisions and there are no jobs that aren't already advertisted on their website/JCP/newspaper. As for the JCP job bus... (sometimes van, lorry ..) its just the jobs as available on directgov and jobpoints.
I suggest you avoid them when you can, as unless you are straight in and straight out, its wasting the average person a few hours and costing money round trip. I think that is better spent with other jobsearching activities and lets face it £4 can buy you postage for speculative applications or for applying to jobs. (or 4 lottery tickets!! lol)0 -

Oh for goodness sake. Here we go again. Having a pop at me for stating FACTUAL things about the disgusting way these employers treat us jobless. Ho hum...
Take a step back and read what you have written. Now think about why you have not got a job. Until you change your attitude you are not going to be an attractive potential employee.Gone ... or have I?0 -

Disgusting way employers treat people who don't work for them?
What the hell are you on about?
What is disgusting about it? You really are hard done by, having to go to job fairs and all that! What happened to the days where you could just sit on your !!!! and get people ringing you up offering jobs with £50,000 salaries?!Per Mare Per Terram0 -

And how exactly have the employers treated you?
They have to pay to attend these fairs and so dont do it for charity!
If they have vacancies they will advertise them, if they are there without a vacancy it is probably as a marketing exercise.
They dont owe you anything but equally are not there for the fun of it.0 -
i have been to only one job fair and that was ast year i got a job within 20 mins of getting there
i admit i did quit after a few days as dint like it lol but i got one lol 0 -
For your information, the "disgusting" way that employers treat me is when they don't reply to job applications - even on spec ones.
And I'm sorry, but I don't accept all this rubbish about employers "not owing me anything." It is only common courtesy and manners to acknowledge a person when they send them an on spec job query. I know if I were an employer and somebody wrote to me enquiring about work, then I would certainly acknowledge them. But of course, you don't get everybody like yourself these days, do you?
Oh yes, and one more thing: instead of having a go at me all the time, why don't you instead divert your sneering and disparaging comments to the ones who DO deserve to be criticised (e.g. these recruitment consultants who never return your calls etc. etc.).
Being long-term unemployment has caused me incessant distress and upset, a fact which, sadly, all those on here who are too quick to shout me down appear to be overlooking (or WANTING to overlook).Disgusting way employers treat people who don't work for them?

I went to a job fair a few years ago and just wish I'd taken a bigger bag with me to bring home all the freebies I got. Won't need any mugs, pens, pads or keyrings for a while!Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free

Mortgage free since 2014

I'm guessing there is a reason people don't answer your applications and calls, eh? Attitude mate, attitude. If your applications have even an iota of the bad attitude and whingeing you perform on here, then you won't get a sniff of a job.
Of course, I've said it many times and you won't be listening to anything you don't want to hear, as usual.....If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0
